Turkish jets strike PKK targets in northern Iraq

The Turkish military has said it carried out air strikes on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) positions in the southeastern province of Hakkari and in northern Iraq.

A military statement on Tuesday said the Turkish jets hit PKK shelters, underground bunkers and weapon emplacements in six locations in northern Iraq, including the Qandil mountains, where the PKK leadership is based.

The military strikes suggest that there will be no let-up in the military campaign against the PKK in the wake of Sunday's vote.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) won back its parliamentary majority on Sunday in a major victory for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who has pledged to continue the operations against the PKK after a two-year cease-fire collapsed in July.

Turkey has been striking PKK positions in the mountains of northern Iraq as well as in the southeast following the collapse of a cease-fire in July that has seen the most intense fighting between PKK and the state since the 1990s.
