Syria Crisis Could Be Solved Through Clarified UNSC Resolution - (Lavrov)

The latest UN Security Council resolution on Syria has to be clarified, which could pave the way toward settlement, the Russian foreign minister said.

The Syrian conflict might be solved based on the latest UN Security Council resolution, though clarifications need to be made to the document, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

"There is a way out. The solution is written down in the latest UN Security Council resolution. I watch our talk shows where many people take what is happening very personally, saying it won't work because there are no specific agreements regarding terrorists in this resolution, about who will represent the opposition delegation," Lavrov told Russia's Zvezda channel.

"Syria still has a chance based on this resolution, which, of course, needs to be clarified," the minister added.

Path of Assad's 'Illegitimacy' in Syrian Political Process Should Not Be Followed

Those who say Syrian President Bashar Assad has become illegitimate should not be followed, Sergei Lavrov said.

“If we measure our feelings from this year in foreign political ‘cubits,’ then it ended with the difficult and important process of Syria’s chemical demilitarization. I draw your attention to this fact because it was this year that final summaries were made and this happened at the same time we were actively trying to reach a political settlement to the Syrian crisis.

Some of our associates say that they are ready for this only on the condition that it is guaranteed Syrian President Bashar Assad will not be present in the political process or in the future structures because he’s illegitimate,” Lavrov said.

Lavrov noted that Assad was “legitimate when chemical weapons from Syria needed to be removed and destroyed.”
