UK bombers carry out first strikes against IS after parliament vote

British fighter jets carried out their first airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Syria, just hours after after a decisive parliamentary vote uproved the motion to join the international offensive against the terror group.

A number of Royal Air Force Tornados took off from a British air base in Cyprus shortly after the vote.

Further details about the targets would be provided later Thursday, a British Foreign Office officil told the AP agency on condition of anonimity.

RAF warplanes have carried out the first British bombing runs over Syria, its ministry of defence has confirmed.

The air strikes were carried out within hours of a vote by MPs in the House of Commons to back extending operations against so-called Islamic State militants from neighbouring Iraq.

Four RAF Tornado jets, which carry a range of munitions including Paveway IV guided bombs and precision-guided Brimstone missiles, took off from the Akrotiri base in Cyprus but defence officials refused to be drawn on the targets of their mission.

A ministry of defence spokesman said the sorties had returned from the "first offensive operation over Syria and have conducted strikes".

  5. UK air attack on Islamic State: Syrians give reactions...

...A number of Syrians have been giving their reaction to the British decision.
"Raqqa is being Slaughtered Silently" - citizen journalist group in the IS stronghold

The group said on Twitter that it opposed UK bombing raids.

"We are against the UK strikes on Raqqa. All the world is bombing Raqqa and the UK will not make any change in the situation. If the UK wants to help people then it should accept Syrian refugees and not close the border.

"Just bombing IS in Raqqa from the sky will not defeat IS, but it will make people suffer more. IS will use the UK strikes to recruit new people in the West and new fighters and maybe they will carry out terrorist attacks.

"In the end nobody will liberate Raqqa except the people of Raqqa."............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34992616
