Brussels terror threat returns to level 2 out of 4

The terror threat level for police stations in the Belgian capital has been reduced from three to two - out of a possible four - Belgium's Co-ordinating Body for Threat Analysis (OCAM) announced on Monday.

La Libre Belgique newspaper reports that the terror risk had been at level 3 since Dec. 28, after an evaluation by OCAM suggested the possibility of attackers targeting the Grand-Place main square in Brussels during the new year festivities as well as the city's central police station and police and army street patrols.

According to the Belgian interior ministry, a level 2 alert signifies that the threat is "unlikely," while level 3 means the threat is "possible and likely."

The highest of the four levels, meaning a "serious and imminent" risk of an attack, was applied to the Brussels region from Nov. 21-26 in the wake of the Paris terror attacks.
