China ‘firmly opposed’ to nuclear tests after N.Korea’s H-bomb claims

China on Friday reiterated its firm opposition to the nuclear test of North Korea, while calling for a peaceful settlement of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula.

In a phone call with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se on Friday evening, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China always stands firmly opposed to nuclear tests by North Korea, according to the foreign ministry.

Wang also said that China is willing to maintain communication with South Korea to deal with the situation and to push for negotiations on denuclearization of the peninsula.

 China has always adhered to objective of denuclearization of the peninsula and maintain peace and stability in the peninsula, Wang emphasized during the talk.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying also said at a Friday press briefing that other sides should address the issue in a calm way and avoid intensifying contradictions.

"China is not the cause and crux of the Korean nuclear issue, nor is it the key to resolving the problem ... China has been calling for and seeking proper settlement of different parties' reasonable concerns," Hua added.

North Korea claimed Wednesday that it had successfully carried out its first hydrogen bomb test.

The test, if confirmed, will be the fourth nuclear test conducted by the country.

The previous three were carried out in 2006, 2009 and 2013, respectively.
