3 More Killed as Caste Violence Escalates in India, Death Toll Rises to 19

Local officials said three more people were killed and nine others were wounded on Monday in the latest outbreak of violence in the state of Haryana, where members of the Jat community are demanding reservation in government jobs.

The killings occurred in the district of Sonipat, where demonstrators hurled stones on government troops and clashed with army personnel who were deployed to the area to restore law and order.

Monday's killings raised the death toll from caste violence to 19, while about 200 people were reported injured throughout the state. According to a senior government official, army and paramilitary personnel were clearing road blockade along the Ambala-Delhi highway in Ladsoli village when the demonstrators clashed with them.

The violence came a day after the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) vowed to to bring a bill to the lawmaking body in Haryana so Jats will be included in the category of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the state. While some members of the community have accepted the government announcement, others are demanding local government officials to bring an ordinance on the matter.

The demonstrations have turned violent since Friday and led to arson targeting government buildings, malls, shops, petrol stations, vehicles railways stations, etc. Locals said the demonstrators also looted an armory and several shops.

The demonstrators even damaged the equipment in the Munak canal, which is the primary source of portable water for New Delhi, causing a severe water crisis affecting 17 million people in the capital city. The army has already secured the Munak canal, but the water board officials of Delhi said it will take time to fully restore water supply to the metropolis.

The Supreme Court of India has denied inclusion of Jats in the OBC list on the ground that the country's commission of backward castes does not regard Jats as economically and socially backward in Haryana.

  1. Water supply 'partially restored' in Delhi...

Water supply has been partially restored in the Indian capital, Delhi, where up to 10 million were affected after protesters sabotaged a key canal.

The army took control of the Munak canal in neighbouring Haryana state on Monday after Jat community protesters, angry at caste job quotas, seized it.

Delhi Water Minister Kapil Mishra said the "crisis was still not over" and urged people to use water carefully.

The city's schools, which were closed because of the crisis, have reopened.

Sixteen million people live in Delhi, and around three-fifths of the city's water is supplied by the Munak canal, which runs through Haryana.....http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-35638161
