Making new borders within EU "very very bad development"

The mayor of the capital city of Austria on Thursday said the European Union (EU) has yet to realize a common policy over the refugees, stressing that making new borders within the union is negative.

"I think it's a very very bad signal and very very bad development for the European Union", Michael Haupl, the mayor of Vienna, told Xinhua.

Some EU member states are strengthening border controls as refugees continue to flow in and it has also been reported Germany sent some of the refugees back to Austria.

Haupl, 66, said there should be no borders within the EU and between its member states, which is a common ground for the union.

He said Vienna would not end the welcoming policy to the refugees, especially to the people who are from the war-torn areas. However, he noted that Austria is not large and would only be able to take around 100,000 refugees.

Austria, the last station on migrants' way to the Germany, has announced that the country would cap the number of refugees it takes in.
