Syria's Assad compares Aleppo to Stalingrad as 28 civilians killed in strikes

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Thursday compared second city Aleppo to Stalingrad, according to the Syrian state run SANA news agency.

The comparison was made in message that Assad sent to Russian President Vladimir Putin to congratulate his ally as Victory Day, the celebration marking the Nazi surrender, approaches.

The 1942-1943 Battle of Stalingrad saw the city besieged and occupied by Nazi forces who were eventually forced to surrender by the Red Army. It was the first major defeat for the Nazis and a turning point in the war.

The devastated city was almost entirely rebuilt after the war and contains a vast memorial complex. It was renamed Volgograd in 1961 after Nikita Khrushchev denounced the excesses of Stalin's rule. Prior to the Soviet revolution, it was called Tsaritsyn.

In the message, Assad highlighted the heavy price that the Russian people paid which will inspire future generations, and said that Aleppo, as well as a number of other cities had become like "heroic" Stalingrad through the course of the civil war.

According to SANA, Assad vowed that “despite the brutality and cruelty of the enemy, and the great sacrifices and pains, our cities, towns, people and army will not be satisfied until they defeat the enemy and achieve victory serving the interests of Syria, the region and the world.”........http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/international/middle-east/112244-160505-syria-s-assad-compares-aleppo-to-stalingrad-as-28-civilians-killed-in-strikes
