EU enlargement process "will not stop" - commissioner

Johannes Hahn said in Vienna on Friday that the outcome of the British referendum "must not and will not stop the process of EU enlargement."

"The EU is still committed to the enlargement, there is no doubt about it - we are continuing the work that we have started, which is by far not complete," Hahn said at a conference on public administration as a foundation of European integration.

  • A lot has been achieved in the Balkans in the past couple of years and we should not become "tired or desperate" after Thursday's referendum in the UK, the commissioner, in charge of EU's neighborhood policy and enlargement negotiations, said.

"We are aware, and have been before that the process of enlargement is something that requires time, and therefore I prefer to speak about a process rather than about negotiations," said Hahn.
