BBC, ITV and Sky News have all called the poll in favour of the Leave campaign.
Strong performances for Leave in the English shires, Wales and north-eastern places like Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool were countered by emphatic majorities in London for Remain, which also picked up large swathes of Scotland and Northern Ireland.
In what UKIP leader Nigel Farage hailed as an "amazing" result, Sheffield voted narrowly to Leave.
Sterling fell sharply on financial markets in response to fears that Britain may be about to vote to quit the European Union after 43 years, losing 3% within moments of the Sunderland result.
Pro-Leave Tories including Boris Johnson and Michael Gove signed a letter to David Cameron urging him to stay on as leader whatever the result of the referendum.
But others in the party raised questions over Mr Cameron's future...

ReplyDeleteΟι βρετανικές κάλπες έκλεισα και παρότι η πρώτη δημοσκόπηση του sky news έδινε 52% υπέρ της παραμονής στην ΕΕ. οι οοονύκτιες ανατροπές έδωσαν το χαρακτήρα θρίλερ στην εκλογική αναμέτρηση. Η εικόνα στα 338 από τα 382 εκλογικά τμήματα έφερνε μπροστά το Brexit με ποσοστό 51,7% και το Bremain στο 48,3%.

The results of Britain's vote Thursday will seriously hurt the continental unity forged after World War II. The U.K. is the first major country to decide to leave the bloc, which evolved from the ashes of war as the region's leaders sought to build links and avert future hostility.
