Two-thirds of votes counted :Britain heading towards Leave vote

Britain appears to be on course to leave the European Union with the Leave side leading polling by more than half a million votes with almost two-thirds of votes counted.

BBC, ITV and Sky News have all called the poll in favour of the Leave campaign.

Strong performances for Leave in the English shires, Wales and north-eastern places like Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool were countered by emphatic majorities in London for Remain, which also picked up large swathes of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In what UKIP leader Nigel Farage hailed as an "amazing" result, Sheffield voted narrowly to Leave.

Sterling fell sharply on financial markets in response to fears that Britain may be about to vote to quit the European Union after 43 years, losing 3% within moments of the Sunderland result.

Pro-Leave Tories including Boris Johnson and Michael Gove signed a letter to David Cameron urging him to stay on as leader whatever the result of the referendum.

  2. Μπροστά το Brexit με 51,7% - Στο 48,3% το Bremain...

    Οι βρετανικές κάλπες έκλεισα και παρότι η πρώτη δημοσκόπηση του sky news έδινε 52% υπέρ της παραμονής στην ΕΕ. οι οοονύκτιες ανατροπές έδωσαν το χαρακτήρα θρίλερ στην εκλογική αναμέτρηση. Η εικόνα στα 338 από τα 382 εκλογικά τμήματα έφερνε μπροστά το Brexit με ποσοστό 51,7% και το Bremain στο 48,3%.

  3. With 304 out of 382 votes counted, Brexit was ahead at 52 percent following Thursday's referendum...

    An earlier poll showed the number of votes cast stood at 7.8 million for "Leave", 51.69 percent, compared to 7.3 million for "Remain", or 48.31 percent.

    Top anti-EU campaigner Nigel Farage said he was increasingly confident of victory on Friday after early results from Britain's EU referendum put the "Leave" camp ahead.

  4. UK broadcasters are predicting that Britain has voted to leave the 28-nation European Union in a historic referendum...

    With 329 of 382 counting centres reporting results, the "leave" side is ahead by over 900,000 votes.

    The results of Britain's vote Thursday will seriously hurt the continental unity forged after World War II. The U.K. is the first major country to decide to leave the bloc, which evolved from the ashes of war as the region's leaders sought to build links and avert future hostility.

  6. Vizekanzler Sigmar Gabriel reagiert bitter enttäuscht auf die sich abzeichnende Entscheidung der Briten für einen EU-Austritt. "Damn! Ein schlechter Tag für Europa", so Gabriel auf Twitter.

    However, no other region of England has voted in favour of remaining.
