The attack occurred shortly after midnight when a group of gunmen disguised in military uniforms stormed the shrine of Saiyd Mohammed in the town of Balad, some 80 km north of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, while two suicide bombers detonated explosives with themselves at the shrine, the source said on condition of anonymity.
The gunmen, who believed to be members of Islamic State (IS) group, also held an unknown number of Shiite pilgrims hostages inside the shrine, but the security forces freed the hostages after fierce clash, killing all the attackers, the source said.
The battle with IS caused damages to the shrine and set fire to some surrounding buildings, the source added...

ReplyDeleteIslamic State group militants killed 30 people at a Shiite shrine north of Baghdad, striking the area with suicide bombers, gunfire and mortar rounds, an Iraqi security spokesman said Friday.
The overnight attack also wounded 50 people, the Joint Operations Command spokesman said in a statement.
The Sayyid Mohammed shrine was first targeted with mortar rounds, after which suicide bombers arrived at the shrine and opened fire, the statement said.
Two of the bombers then blew themselves up in a market next to the shrine while the third was killed and his explosive belt defused, it said, without specifying which forces killed the bomber.
The attack in the Balad area, located 70 kilometres (around 45 miles) north of Baghdad, came just five days after a suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged minibus in the capital, killing 292 people.....i24news.tv by AFP

ReplyDelete30 personnes ont été tuées par des membres du groupe Etat islamique lors d'une attaque contre un mausolée chiite dans la nuit de jeudi à vendredi, quelques jours après l'un des pires attentats qui ont secoué l'Irak.
Selon un responsable des forces de sécurité, des membres du groupe Etat islamique ont d'abord bombardé au mortier le mausolée Sayed Mohamed, situé à Balad, à environ 80 km au nord de la capitale irakienne, puis des kamikazes se sont fait exploser sur un marché à proximité. Cette attaque s'est produite cinq jours après un attentat au minibus piégé à Bagdad qui a fait près de 300 morts, l'un des plus meurtriers qui ont secoué l'Irak depuis l'invasion américaine en 2003.
Après les tirs de mortiers, deux kamikazes ont pénétré dans le mausolée, y ont ouvert le feu, puis se sont fait exploser sur un marché à proximité, a indiqué un porte-parole du commandement des opérations conjointes dans un communiqué. Un troisième kamikaze a été tué et sa ceinture explosive désamorcée, a précisé ce porte-parole, attribuant cette attaque à l'EI.
Le groupe jihadiste avait plus tôt cette semaine revendiqué un attentat suicide commis dimanche dans un quartier commerçant de Bagdad. Selon le dernier bilan des autorités jeudi, au moins 292 personnes ont été tuées et quelque 200 blessées dans cette attaque qui a suscité la fureur des Irakiens.....rtl.be
