Director of the CIA: Syria is unlikely to remain a single state

CIA Director John Brennan said, speaking at the aspen Forum on security, which doubts the possibility to save Syria as a single state because of the acute contradictions between different groups and interests.


According to him, perhaps in the future Syria will get a confederal arrangement in which each group will be Autonomous to manage their region.

Brennan also said that the Syrian issue cannot be resolved without restoration of peace in Iraq.

  • He added that it is necessary to set a clear transitional period and to ensure that Bashar Assad will be no more President of the country.

In the five years that have passed since the beginning of the civil war in Syria killed at least 280 thousand people. Millions of Syrians have become refugees.
