Fifth officer dies in Dallas shooting, suspect in stand off with police

Five police officers were shot dead and six others injured by at least two snipers on Thursday night during a protest against police racial bias in downtown Dallas, police chief David Brown said.

A suspect has barricaded himself with a gun in a parking garage at the El Centro college campus and was exchanging fire with police, Brown said in a press conference. The suspect is claiming he had planted numerous bombs, says he is going to kill more officers, and is saying that "the end is coming", said Brown.

As many as four shooters were likely working together from elevated positions with rifles, said the police chief. Another man turned himself into the police after the authorities tweeted a picture of him wearing camouflage and an assault rifle slung across his shoulder, with a call for information on his whereabouts.

It is legal for those with permits to openly carry weapons in the state of Texas. The man, named as Mark Hughes, was later released.

The protests were part of demonstrations taking part in several cities against the fatal police shootings of African-American men in Minnesota and Louisiana this week.

The protests came after the shooting of Philando Castile, 32, by police near St. Paul late on Wednesday. His girlfriend posted live video on the Internet of the bloody scene minutes after and was widely viewed.

Castile’s death occurred within a day of the shooting of 37-year-old Alton Sterlingin Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Sterling was killed during an altercation with two white police officers......http://www.i24news.tv/en/news/international/americas/119248-160708-fifth-officer-dies-in-dallas-shooting-police-exchange-fire-with-suspect
