Iraqi army retakes four villages, occupied by ISIS, south of Mosul

The iraqi army has retaken, in the last hours, four villages south of Mosul which were occupied by the jihadist group Islamic State (IS), after a series of combats and airstrikes that killed 57 jihadists.

The Commanding Officer leading the Niniveh Military Operations Command, general Neshm Abdalá al Yaburi, informed EFE that his troops had liberated the villages of Al Imam Garbi, Al Marir, Al Taleá y Al Bezayela, some 55 km south of Mosul, Niniveh's provincial capital.

The intense combats that recaptured these villages from IS control began yesterday Friday and lasted till early this morning.

Al Yaburi also pointed out that as a result of the combats and international coalition airstrikes at these four villages killed 57 IS fighters, including 7 suicide car-bombers.

The Iraqi general also stated that his command is awaiting orders from Iraqi Prime Minister, Haidar al Abadi, to liberate the remaining areas of Al Qayara, 55 km south of Mosul, where thousands of civilians remain trapped by IS

The iraqi forces, including Sunni clan militias and Kurdish army Peshmergas are fighting against IS in the environs of Mosul, and in the past weeks, have advanced towards the city, the main jihadist enclave in iraqi territory.

Mosul has been in hands of IS since June 2014 when the jihadist group declared a caliphate in its conquered Iraqi and Syrian territories.

Since then it has steadily been losing ground in both countries, especially in Iraq, fighting iraqi government troops which count with international coalition air support led by the United States (US.)
