British PM says to seek harmonious leave of EU

British Prime Minister Theresa May said here on Monday that Britain will not have its back to Europe although it will leave the European Union (EU).

A harmonious leave of EU is in the interest of Britain as well as other EU countries, May said while meeting with Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen on her first official visit to the country.

Rasmussen said the relation between Denmark and Britain is strong and it is tragic that Britain leaves the EU.

"But the British have made their decision and we respect that," the Danish prime minister said at a joint press conference after the meeting.

Rasmussen said he would work for a "friendly divorce" between Britain and the EU when talks over an exit deal begin.

He added that a "friendly divorce" will be the starting point in the coming negotiations.

May announced last week that she would initiate the Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty in the first quarter of 2017, which means that Britain should be out of the EU within two years.
