Explosion at Athens restaurant kills 1, injures 5

An explosion and subsequent fire in Athens city center on Thursday killed one person and injured at least five more, police informed.

The blast occurred at 9:25 am local time in a café basement and was attributed to a gas leak.

Police cordoned off the area while eight firefighting trucks worked to extinguish the fire.

The explosion damaged the café as well as surrounding stores and cars.

Once the flames were extinguished, firefighters and technicians from the gas company began investigating the cause of the explosion.
