Obama says he told Russia to stop hacking

President Barack Obama said Friday that he told Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to end cyber attacks against targets in the United States and warned him of reprisals if the hacking continued.

The first question at Obama's traditional year-end press conference was whether he was allowing Putin to "get away" with interfering in last month's election to choose his successor.

"Now, with respect to how this thing unfolded last year, let's just go through the facts pretty quickly. At the beginning of the summer, we were alerted to the possibility that the DNC (Democratic National Committee) has been hacked," the president said. "And once we had clarity and certainty around what in fact had happened, we publicly announced that in fact Russia had hacked into the DNC."

Obama said that his administration made a deliberate decision not to speculate on the motives for the hacking or the effect it might have on the presidential contest between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.
