Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi announced early Monday that later in the day he will present his resignation to the country's president, Sergio Mattarella, after his defeat in the referendum held on the weekend.
The premier made the announcement after acknowledging from the government headquarters in Rome that the "No" option had prevailed in the Sunday referendum on constitutional reform that he had proposed.
A projection by the Piepoli Institute/IPR for state broadcaster RAI, estimated those voting 'Yes' to back the reform at 39-43%, compared with 57-61% for 'No'.
The euro immediately fell against the dollar on the exit polls, slipping to $1.0580 from $1.0625.
