North Korea launches new missile toward Sea of Japan (East Sea), Tokyo, South Korea say

Sea of Japan (East Sea)
North Korea launched a new missile into the Sea of Japan (East Sea) late Friday according to the Japanese government which added that it appeared to have been a ballistic projectile.

The launch was also confirmed by the North Korean military, South Korean news agency Yonhap News reported.

  1. Senior US and South Korean military officials have discussed military options after North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

Marine General Joseph Dunford was joined by the Commander of US Pacific Command, Admiral Harry Harris, when they called General Lee Sun-jin, chairman of the South Korean Joint Chief of Staff, a US military spokesman said.

"During the call Dunford and Harris expressed the ironclad commitment to the US-Republic of Korea alliance.

The three leaders also discussed military response options," said Captain Greg Hicks, a spokesman for Gen Dunford.

Earlier, the Pentagon said ICBM flew for about 1,000 km before landing in Japan's exclusive economic zone.

    1. The Russian Defense Ministry said the North Korean missile launched earlier on Friday flew 732 kilometers, reached an altitude of 681 kilometers and fell in the central part of the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

The Russian ministry said that the North Korea missile appears to be not an ICBM as the US, Japan and South Korea believe, but "a medium-range ballistic missile based on its technical characteristics."

DPRK's missile flew far away from Russian borders and "didn't pose a threat to Russia," the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Earlier in the day, the Pentagon said that the US military assessed that North Korea’s missile launch on Friday was an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) that traveled 1,000 kilometers.
