Greece, France tout European defence autonomy with warships deal

 --

France and Greece have signed another military deal for the sale of three warships.

This agreement is the second between Paris and Athens this year, and French President Emmanuel Macron used the occasion to emphasise his long-held belief that the European Union can no longer rely on the United States to defend its strategic interests.

Greece is building up its armed forces amid tension with Turkey over gas exploration rights in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The deal is seen as a boost to the French defence industry, after the loss of a multibillion-dollar submarine order from Australia.
