Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said Almaty airport was seized by what he called “terrorists” on Wednesday evening.
He also said five planes had been hijacked.
“Terrorist gangs are seizing major infrastructure, including at Almaty airport, five planes, including foreign planes,” he said. “Almaty has been attacked, destroyed and vandalized.”
Earlier Wednesday, Tokayev warned that there would be a “harsh” response to the unrest that continued to rock the Central Asian country.
“As president, I am obliged to protect the security and peace of our citizens, to care for the integrity of Kazakhstan,” Tokayev told Kazakh television.
Later, and in a message shared on Russian media, Tokayev said: “There were deaths and injuries. The situation threatens the safety of all Almaty residents, and this cannot be tolerated.
