NPT Review Conference Failed To Adopt Final Document Over Ukrainian Issue - UN Official - UrduPoint

Participants of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) Review Conference have failed to adopt a final document primarily over disagreements o n the Ukrainian issue, UN Under-Secretary-General of Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu said.

According to the Russian delegation, the draft document was not balanced and some countries had objections concerning its provisions. The United States blamed Russia for the failure to adopt the document.

"I would say that the implication of the Ukrainian war was the biggest reason for this conference now to be able to adopt the consensus document," Nakamitsu said.

Ukraine and its Western supervisors bear responsibility for the failure of the review conference on the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to adopt the final document, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to international organizations in Geneva Andrey Belousov said on Friday.

"These states, namely Ukraine and the supervisors of the Kiev regime, bear full responsibility for the lack of a final positive result of the review," he said.

"The conference became a political hostage of those who poisoned discussions for four weeks with their politicized, biased, groundless and false statements on Ukraine," Belousov explained.

"They did everything to prevent a constructive, effective and result-oriented conference and in general, the activities of the states-parties to the NPT during the entire review process. Their desire to impose unacceptable political language on Ukrainian affairs is pure provocation on the part of those who are ready to sacrifice the results of the multi-year NPT review process and use the conference to settle scores with Russia, raising topics that are not directly related to the treaty. The approach of these states runs counter to the priority issues in the context of the NPT of creating a positive international atmosphere for moving along the path of nuclear disarmament, which requires the joint efforts of nuclear and non-nuclear states," he added.

The Western delegations insisted on including provisions in the final document of the NPT review conference that would express concern about the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and emphasize the need to send an IAEA inspection there as soon as possible. The delegation of the Russian Federation pointed out that the document was adopted for a review period, traditionally five years, so the focus should be on global issues, rather than politicizing a specific situation that could be resolved in the near future.[TASS]
