Russia Warns NATO of Consequences of Disregarding ‘Red Lines’ | Farsnews Agency

In a press statement, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that NATO’s “destructive” policy of ignoring the “red lines” defined by Moscow is very risky.

Ryabkov added, “The NATO countries’ destructive path of ignoring our red lines and being dragged into a confrontation with Russia in Ukraine, which stands on the brink of direct armed conflict, is fraught with danger. It is clear that this is full of dangers with further escalation up to a military clash of nuclear powers with serious consequences,” the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

The possibility of a military clash between Russia and NATO member states possessing nuclear weapons has increased and intensified after the “Ukraine crisis by the regime in Kiev and its Western sponsors”.

Ryabkov pointed out that Russia can only resort to the use of nuclear weapons to repel attacks and self-defense or when the existence of the state is threatened, stressing that “there is no room for guesswork or fantasies here”, Ryabkov said.

Referring to the dangers of using nuclear weapons, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister noted that countries that have nuclear arsenals must adhere to the assumption that wars among themselves are not permissible.

It is noteworthy that at the end of 2021 Russia announced the existence of “red lines”, the violation of which would lead to unimaginable consequences, when it appealed to Western countries to pledge not to continue NATO’s advance on Russia and to refuse Ukraine’s admission the alliance and refuse to set up military bases on the territories of the former Soviet republics.

The Russian proposals also included a clause on the non-deployment of NATO strike weapons near Russia’s borders and the withdrawal of allied forces in Eastern Europe to their positions in 1997.

In late January, the United States and NATO sent Moscow written responses to Russia’s proposals for security guarantees, ignoring a number of basic conditions.

Russia has repeatedly pointed out that NATO aims at confrontation.
