Suspect detained after Slovak PM, Robert Fico , shot

Slovak PM Robert Fico was shot in front of a cultural community centre in the town of Handlova, where a government meeting had been held, reports say.

 Slovak's emergency services dispatched a helicopter to a 59-year-old man in Handlova after receiving information that he was shot, it posted on social media.

"The action is still under way", the emergency service says.

A video showed several men rushing to detain the suspect just outside the cultural centre in Handlova.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, 59, was initially bundled into a car by his security team, and local reports say he was then airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

    Mr Fico, a populist leader accused of being Kremlin-friendly, has been prime minister since last year.

    "Today, after the government meeting in Handlova, there was an assassination attempt on the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico," the government said in a post on social media.

  2. The attacker who attempted to assassinate Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico used a legally registered short-barreled weapon to shoot, the Dennik N news agency reported on Wednesday.
    Earlier in the day, media reported that Fico was taken to an ICU unit in a hospital after an assassination attempt that took place at a venue of the government’s field meeting.
    The shooter is a man born in 1953, the newspaper added.

  3. According to unofficial information, the shooter is a writer, a supporter of the opposition party Progressive Slovakia, Juraj Cintula (born in 1953). His photo were published in social networks.
