Η Νότια Κορέα και οι ΗΠΑ --που διατηρούν 28.500 στρατιώτες τους στο νότο της κορεατικής χερσονήσου-- άρχισαν τις κοινές ασκήσεις τους υπό την ονομασία Key Resolve με τη συμμετοχή χιλιάδων στρατιωτών (10.000 Νοτιοκορεατών και 3.500 Αμερικανών), οι οποίες θα διαρκέσουν δύο εβδομάδες.
Όπως κάθε χρόνο η Πιονγκγιάνγκ καταδίκασε τα γυμνάσια, τα οποία θεωρεί άσκηση για εισβολή στο έδαφός της.
Οι στρατιωτικές ασκήσεις πραγματοποιούνται στο σενάριο μιας αμερικανο-νοτιοκορεατικής αντιμετώπισης πιθανής επίθεσης από το βορρά.
Οι ασκήσεις διεξάγονται μια εβδομάδα μετά την κλιμάκωση της έντασης στην κορεατική χερσόνησο: η Πιονγκγιάνγκ προειδοποίησε την περασμένη εβδομάδα ότι θα καταγγείλει από σήμερα τη συμφωνία ανακωχής με την οποία τερματίστηκε ο πόλεμος της Κορέας το 1953, απείλησε με "θερμοπυρηνικό πόλεμο" και προειδοποίησε τις ΗΠΑ ότι θα εκτεθούν σε "προληπτική πυρηνική επίθεση".
Οι σχέσεις της Βόρειας Κορέας με τη Νότια Κορέα και τις ΗΠΑ είχαν ενταθεί τα τελευταία πέντε χρόνια και φέτος η ένταση κλιμακώθηκε μετά την τρίτη πυρηνική δοκιμή της Πιονγκγιάνγκ στις 12 Φεβρουαρίου, με αποτέλεσμα την ψήφιση στο Συμβούλιο Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ νέων κυρώσεων σε βάρος του βορρά, την Παρασκευή. Αιτία του εκρηκτικού αυτού κλίματος, είναι επίσης η επιτυχής δοκιμή πυραύλου της Πιονγκγιάνγκ το Δεκέμβριο, η οποία θεωρήθηκε από τη Σεούλ και τους συμμάχους δοκιμή βαλλιστικού πυραύλου.
Μετά την ψήφιση στον ΟΗΕ, το βορειοκορεατικό καθεστώς ανακοίνωσε ότι στο εξής θεωρεί χωρίς ισχύ και εγκυρότητα "όλες οι συμφωνίες της μη επίθεσης μεταξύ Βορρά και Νότου".
Η εφημερίδα Rodong Sinmum, όργανο του βορειοκορεατικού κομμουνιστικού κόμματος, ανακοινώνει στο σημερινό φύλλο της "την πλήρη ακύρωση" της συμφωνίας ανακωχής. "Με την ανακωχή 'που ανατινάχθηκε', κανείς δεν μπορεί να προβλέψει τι θα συμβεί εφεξής στο έδαφος αυτό", γράφει.
Το υπουργείο Ενοποίησης της Νότιας Κορέας, αρμόδιο για τις σχέσεις μεταξύ των δύο γειτόνων, ανακοίνωσε σήμερα ότι ο βορράς φαίνεται πως άρχισε να εφαρμόζει μια από τις απειλές του, τη διακοπή της κόκκινης γραμμής μεταξύ της Πιονγκγιάνγκ και της Σεούλ, της γραμμής επικοινωνίας σε περίπτωση έκτακτης ανάγκης.
Η γραμμή αυτή που καθιερώθηκε το 1971, έχει διακοπεί πέντε φορές από το βορρά, την τελευταία φορά το 2010. Οι δύο πλευρές τη χρησιμοποιούν συνήθως δύο φορές την ημέρα αλλά "ο βορράς δεν απάντησε σήμερα το πρωί", δήλωσε εκπρόσωπος του υπουργείου.
Απειλές, προκλήσεις και επίδειξη ισχύος είναι συνήθεις στις δύο πλευρές της γραμμής οριοθέτησης στην κορεατική χερσόνησο μετά το τέλος του αδελφοκτόνου πολέμου πριν από σχεδόν 50 χρόνια. Ωστόσο ορισμένοι παρατηρητές θεωρούν ότι η κατάσταση είναι τόσο τεταμένη που το παραμικρό επεισόδιο μπορεί να προκαλέσει σοβαρές συνέπειες.

Tension rising on Korean Peninsula.....

The tension on the Korean Peninsula shows no sign of abating as South Korea and the US kicked off their "Key Resolve" military drill on Monday. The drill takes place amid severe threats from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea for an all-out war as well as concrete actions to cut off a hotline with South Korea. The DPRK also warns that it will nullify an armistice with the South once the drill starts.
Meanwhile in South Korea, President Park Geun-hye has also ramped up efforts for cabinet appointments, as South Koreans staged nationwide protest against the drill.
As scheduled, South Korea and the United States kicked off their annual joint military exercises on Monday.
Lasting about two weeks, the "Key Resolve" will bring together about 10,000 South Korean troops as well as 3,500 US troops.
Escalating its war of words, the DPRK severed a Red Cross hotline with South Korea earlier in the day.
The emergency link was set up to deal with any contingency along the demilitarized zone of Panmunjom, which separates the two Koreas, Yonhap News Agency reported.
South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said, "It’s true that North Korea isn’t answering the communication hotline that runs through Panmunjom at the moment and North Korea’s Chief of General Staff, Hyon Young-chol, visited the Panmunjom and inter-Korean areas. Other than that, there has been no extraordinary movement."
Further adding fuel to the fire, the DPRK says that it is also expected to launch nationwide military exercises, either on Monday or Tuesday.
Earlier, the DPRK’s supreme military command announced that it would scrap the Korean War Armistice Agreement.
And on Monday, the DPRK’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper reiterated the DPRK’s stance and stressed that the armistice will become totally nullified at the start of the joint drill.
The newspaper adds that the time for fighting has come and the DPRK is ready for an all-out war.
Amid the increasing tension, South Korean President Park Geun-hye has also stepped up efforts for the appointment of her cabinet.
On Monday, Park appointed some of her cabinet ministers.
As she presided over her first Cabinet meeting, Park reiterated her commitment to dealing strongly with any provocation. Though she also said that Seoul should not give up on efforts to engage in talks with the DPRK.
Park is pinning hope on international cooperation to persuade the DPRK to give up nuclear activities. As the posts of defence minister and chief of national security are still empty, Park urged the oppostion to approve her cabinet reorganisation bill.
Meanwhile, people in South Korea are also concerned about the escalation of tension. Many staged protests to demonstrate against the drill. They are worried that the drill may only worsen the tension.
As the military drill continues, it remains to be seen what’s in store for the Korean Peninsula.

ReplyDeleteSEOUL, March 12 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's defense ministry on Tuesday dismissed the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) 's repeated threat of military action as "psychological tactics" meant to pressure South Korea and the United States.
"North Korea (DPRK) has been consistently issuing rhetorical threats warning of provocations," defense ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said in a briefing, calling such threats "an attempt to put psychological pressure" on South Korea.
"(The move is) seen as an attempt to shore up its domestic support and pressure South Korea and the United States into opting for a change in their North Korea policy," Kim added.
While the DPRK is trying to create a "war-like" atmosphere, there currently is no indication that the country is preparing for additional nuclear or missile tests, the spokesman told reporters.
The remarks came amid heightened tension on the Korean Peninsula as Seoul and Washington pressed ahead with the planned military exercise Pyongyang denounced as a pretext for northward invasion.
The DPRK, hit by a fresh round of United Nations sanctions over its third nuclear test last month, has vowed to nullify all non- aggression treaties with the South and declared invalid the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War.
South Korean authorities have repeatedly pledged to immediately retaliate if attacked by the northern neighbor.

ReplyDeleteΟι ΗΠΑ και η Νότια Κορέα oλοκλήρωσαν σήμερα Τρίτη τα κοινά τους γυμνάσια, γεγονός που δίνει ελπίδες για μείωση της έντασης στη βορειοκορεατική χερσόνησο, η οποία συνδέεται με τις πυρηνικές και στρατιωτικές φιλοδοξίες της Βόρειας Κορέας.
Τα γυμνάσια διήρκεσαν δυο μήνες και πήραν μέρος ο νοτιοκορεατικός στρατός και περίπου το ένα τρίτο των 28.500 αμερικανών στρατιωτών που σταθμεύουν στη Νότια Κορέα.
Όπως όλα τα χρόνια, η Πιονγκγιάνγκ καταδίκασε τα γυμνάσια αυτά που θεωρεί ως επέμβαση της Νότιας Κορέας στη Βόρεια με την υποστήριξη της Ουάσινγκτον.

Το επόμενο σημαντικό γεγονός που μπορεί να εξοργίσει την Πιονγκγιάνγκ είναι η συνάντηση στις 7 Μαΐου στην Ουάσινγκτον ανάμεσα στον αμερικανό πρόεδρο Μπαράκ Ομπάμα και την νοτιοκορεάτισσα ομόλογό του Παρκ Γκουέν -Χίε.
"Εάν η Βόρεια Κορέα θεωρήσει τη συνάντηση αυτή απαράδεκτη, θα πρέπει να ζήσουμε με το συνεχή φόβο μιας νέας στρατιωτικής πρόκλησης κοντά στα σύνορα", τόνισε ο Πάικ Χακ-Σουν.

ReplyDeleteΗ Νότια Κορέα και οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες ξεκίνησαν κοινές στρατιωτικές ασκήσεις στην Κίτρινη Θάλασσα για την αντιμετώπιση υποβρυχίων.
Οι ναυτικές στρατιωτικές ασκήσεις θα διαρκέσουν μέχρι την Παρασκευή. Θα λάβουν μέρος αμερικανικά και νοτιοκορεατικά υποβρύχια, μεταξύ των οποίων και το πυρηνικό υποβρύχιο κλάσης «Λος Άντζελες», αντιτορπιλικά και αεροσκάφη ναυτικής επιτήρησης.
«Οι ασκήσεις είναι ένας ετήσιος θεσμός και έχουν σκοπό την προετοιμασία κατά της παράνομης εισβολής του εχθρού», δήλωσε εκπρόσωπος του υπουργείου Άμυνας της Νότιας Κορέας.

S. Korea, U.S. to hold naval exercises involving nuclear-powered aircraft carrier

-- South Korea and the United States plan to hold two days of joint naval exercises off the east coast this week that will involve the nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, a government source said Sunday.
The 97,000-ton Nimitz will leave the port of Busan on Monday morning for the exercises with South Korea's Navy, the source said. The Nimitz Strike Group consists of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and guided-missile destroyers and cruisers.

North Korea puts army on alert, warns US of 'horrible disaster' ...
ReplyDeleteSEOUL - North Korea said on Tuesday its military would be put on high alert and be ready to launch operations, stepping up tension after weeks of rhetoric directed against the United States and South Korea, who it accuses of instigating hostility.
Reclusive North Korea has often issued threats to attack the South and the United States but has rarely turned them into action. Such hostile rhetoric is widely seen as a means to perpetuate its domestic and international political agenda.
In the latest outburst, a spokesman for the North's military warned the United States of "disastrous consequences" for moving a group of ships, including an aircraft carrier, into a South Korean port.
"In this connection, the units of all services and army corps level of the KPA received an emergency order from its supreme command to reexamine the operation plans already ratified by it and keep themselves fully ready to promptly launch operations any time," the spokesman said, referring to the Korean People's Army (KPA).
"The US will be wholly accountable for the unexpected horrible disaster to be met by its imperialist aggression forces' nuclear strike means," the spokesman said in a statement carried by the official KCNA news agency.

North Korea puts armed forces on alert: agency ...
DeleteNorth Korean armed forces have been put on alert for promptly responding to the joint South Korean and US military drills scheduled to begin this week.
The Armed Forces of DPRK have received the orders of supreme command to be 'fully prepared to hit back any time, while monitoring the movements of American and Japanese aggressors and their puppets,' the North Korean KCNA news agency reported.
The North Korean decision was prompted by joint drills planned on October 8-10. However, due to typhoon they have been indefinitely postponed. According to the South Korean navy, they might be finally canceled, South's 'Yonhap' agency reported.
