Lavrov: Syria Gov’t Gaining Ground, No Need to Use Chemical Arms

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said there was no need for the Syrian government to use chemical arms since the Syrian Army was making steady advances on the ground.

"The regime, as the opposition is saying out in the open, is enjoying military success on the ground," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters during a joint press appearance with his Italian counterpart Emma Bonino.
"What sense is there for the regime to use chemical arms -- especially in such small amounts?" Lavrov asked.

Russia said on Friday that US allegations Assad had used chemical weapons during the fight with the foreign-backed militants were fabricated and unconvincing.
US President Barack Obama's administration said on Thursday it would boost military support for the armed opposition as a result.

Lavrov said it would be wrong for the US administration "to be sending signals" to the opposition that may scupper the chances of a peace conference being held in Geneva in the coming weeks.
He added that that a no-fly zone that Washington was reportedly thinking of implementing over a part of Syria near the Jordanian border "would in either case violate international law."
"We hope that our American colleagues will act in accordance with the implementation of the Russian-US initiative concerning preparations for an international conference on Syria," Lavrov said.
The so-called Geneva 2 talks are aimed at getting the two warring sides at the negotiating table for the first time.

    1. U.S. to keep Patriot missiles, F-16 jets in Jordan amid Syria crisis.....
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel approves Jordan's request to keep the weapons there, once the joint Eager Lion Exercises are completed this month.....

The United States will keep Patriot missile batteries and F-16 fighter jets in Jordan after the completion of joint military exercises this month amid the crisis in neighboring Syria, the Pentagon said on Saturday.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel "has approved a request from the Kingdom of Jordan for a detachment of F-16s and Patriot Missiles to remain in Jordan following the conclusion of the Eager Lion Exercise next week," Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement.

"All other U.S. personnel assigned to Jordan for Eager Lion will depart at the conclusion of the exercise. The United States enjoys a longstanding partnership with Jordan and is committed to its defense," Little added.

The Eager Lion exercises being conducted this month are held annually with a theme of irregular warfare and include more than 8,000 service members from about 19 countries, one U.S. official said. The drills will run from June 9 to 20.

"These annual exercises will increase the preparedness of the Jordanian army. This year we are in need of more advanced weapons," Jordanian Minister of Information Mohammad al-Momani told Reuters.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has issued a new call for the Syrian government and opposition to work together to expel all "terrorists and extremists" from Syria.

At the start of a meeting with Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Qadri Jamil in Moscow, Lavrov said that last month's agreement in Northern Ireland for the two sides to work together to expel the "extremists" should "become one of the main points of the proposed international peace conference", Interfax news agency reported on Monday.
