Sinai Peninsula: Israel approves Egypt's request to increase forces. (updated)

Israel has approved a request by the Egyptian army to increase its forces in Sinai, following a rise in violence in the peninsula in recent weeks.

As a part of the 1979 peace treaty signed by the two countries, each country must approve any additional military forces in the area on either side of the border.

Egypt will send two additional battalions to the area - one in Rafah to help thwart smuggling and to defend Al-Arish, that has been repeatedly hit with terrorist attacks recently, and another battalion in the center of the peninsula.

  1. Israel allows two more Egyptian battalions into Sinai....Cairo now has 11 battalions deployed in peninsula, in what Jerusalem calls the first serious crackdown on terror cells there...

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on Monday gave permission for Egypt to deploy two infantry battalions in the Sinai region, in the el-Arish and Rafah areas.

The new forces will join a large number of Egyptian troops already operating in the area, carrying out a major crackdown on terrorist activity, in an agreed departure from the 1979 Israel-Egypt peace agreement that states the peninsula should remain demilitarized.

Egypt submitted a formal request to the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv to send in the extra troops. Ya’alon reviewed it, and approved it.

The additional forces mean that Egypt now has 11 infantry battalions deployed in the Sinai, as well as a tank battalion and assault helicopters — all emplaced with Israel’s formal approval, as required by the treaty.

The crackdown marks the first truly effective Egyptian operation against the Sinai terror groups, an informed source in Jerusalem told The Times of Israel on Monday.

  2. Attack on bus in Sinai kills three people...

CAIRO: At least three people were killed and 17 wounded when suspected militants fired rocket-propelled grenades at a bus carrying workers in Egypt’s North Sinai province early Monday, security and medical sources said.

Witnesses said the attackers shouted “Allahu akbar!” after hitting the vehicle in the city of Al-Arish, at the center of a sharp rise in Islamist militant attacks since President Mohammad Mursi was ousted by the military on July 3.

Egypt’s army said a “terrorist group” had meant to hit a police vehicle but missed and hit the bus instead. The military statement on its spokesman’s Facebook page said the attack took place on the road to Al-Arish....http://www.dailystar.com.lb/News/Middle-East/2013/Jul-15/223709-egypt-militants-kill-three-in-sinai-bus-attack.ashx#ixzz2ZB4hliKA

  4. Report: Egypt prohibits fishing in N. Sinai for security ...

Egypt has banned fishing in waters off the coast of the northern Sinai due to security concerns over militants entering Egyptian territory, Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported on Saturday.

The reported cited Egyptian security officials as saying the prohibition had been implemented to prevent Palestinians and members of militant organizations from entering the peninsula by sea.

Egypt has intensified a crackdown on smuggling tunnels between its volatile Sinai desert and the Gaza Strip causing people to increasingly enter Egypt via fishing boats.

  6. Two soldiers killed by gunmen in North Sinai...

CAIRO - Two Egyptian soldiers were killed and four were injured on Thursday when gunmen opened fire on a military checkpoint near the North Sinai town of Sheikh Zuweid, security and medical sources told Reuters.

Militants also attacked four other army sites in Sheikh Zuweid, which lies near Egypt's border with Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, injuring at least three soldiers.

Egypt's lawless Sinai peninsula has seen a spike in violence since the army ousted the country's Islamist president on July 3.

In separate attacks in Sinai on Wednesday, two soldiers were killed in a gun battle and four militants died when their explosives-laden car detonated near a police base.

Medical sources said around 20 policemen and soldiers have been killed in Sinai since president Mohamed Morsi's exit.

  7. Egypt army launches counter-extremist operation in Sinai – reports...

Egypt’s military forces have started a massive operation against armed extremists in northern Sinai Peninsula, reports in the Egyptian media say.

The operation dubbed ‘Desert Storm’ was launched by the Egyptian army in North Sinai Governorate on Saturday and will last for 48 hours, Al Ahram newspaper said citing security sources.

The military action aims to block extremists’ desert and mountain bases and end terrorist activity in the region, primarily in the northern and central Sinai.

Two of Egypt’s field armies, as well as the country’s Air Force and Navy are reportedly taking part in this large-scale operation.

The military are said to be blocking all the roads, bridges and tunnels leading from Northern Sinai to other provinces of Egypt.

The security forces maintain there are about 500 armed extremists in the area that may use the local civilians as human shield.

  8. Egypt army says 60 militants in Sinai killed...

More than 20 police and soldiers have also died in clashes in the month since the military coup that ousted Mohammed Morsi.

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt’s military spokesman says 60 militants have been killed and 103 arrested on the Sinai Peninsula as part of the army’s operations there over the past month.

Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali released the figures Wednesday on his official Facebook page. He did not name any of suspects killed or detained.

The Facebook post said that authorities also destroyed 102 smuggling tunnels to the Palestinian Gaza Strip during this time.

The military’s figures could not be independently verified.

More than 20 policemen and soldiers have been killed in near daily clashes in Sinai since President Mohammed Morsi’s ouster July 3. About a dozen civilians have also been killed in violence there.

Emboldened militants have increased the frequency of their attacks on the army on the peninsula to exploit the political turmoil.

    1. Morsi allies condemn 'Israeli violation' in Egypt's Sinai...

A coalition of groups supportive of ousted president Mohamed Morsi has condemned what it called "Israeli violation" of Egyptian airspace in the Sinai Peninsula.

"This is a dangerous escalation that threatens Egypt's national security," the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Anadolu Agency on Friday.

At least five Jihadists were killed Friday in an attack on a rocket launcher in the North Sinai city of Rafah.

Sources close to Jihadist groups in Sinai said that an Israeli plane was behind the attack.

The sources added that the attack struck shortly as Jihadists were planning to fire rockets at Israeli targets.

The Israeli daily Haaretz said that an Israeli drone had fired a missile into North Sinai, killing five militants and destroyed a rocket launcher.

But an Egyptian army spokesman denied the reports about the Israeli attack, describing the allegations as "groundless and totally bare of truth".

He dismissed alleged cooperation between Egypt and Israel on the attack as “baseless, insane and illogical” and urged the media to seek accuracy before running similar information as “it poses a grave danger to national security and harm Egyptian sovereignty”.

He reiterated that “Egyptian borders are a red line and will not be allowed to be touched.”

    2. Sinai group says it was planning cross-border attack when hit by Israeli drone...Al-Qaeda-linked organization claims four members were killed; Israel stays silent...

CAIRO (AP) — An al-Qaeda-linked group active in the Sinai Peninsula said Saturday that its fighters were the target of a reported Israeli drone strike into Egyptian territory, a rare operation that could indicate increased Egyptian-Israeli security cooperation against militants in the lawless border zone.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, in a statement posted on a militant website, said that a drone that crossed into Egyptian airspace killed four fighters as they were preparing a cross-border rocket strike into Israel. It said the dead were from Egyptian Sinai tribes and that the rocket squad’s leader escaped.

Egyptian security officials, speaking anonymously on Friday, said that a drone firing from the Israeli side of the border had killed five suspected militants.

The conflicting accounts could not be reconciled. Both said the site of the strike was about five kilometers (three miles) inside Egypt.

Israel has maintained official silence about the strike, suggesting that if the Jewish state was involved, it might be trying to avoid embarrassing the Egyptian military. 12. Israel respects Egypt’s sovereignty, Ya’alon says....

Defense minister neither confirms nor denies Israel’s participation in Friday’s drone strike on Islamic militants in Sinai.

Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon on Saturday addressed a reported Israeli drone strike on an al-Qaeda-linked terror cell in Sinai by saying that Jerusalem respects Egypt’s sovereignty and that preserving the Israeli-Egyptian peace treaty is of utmost importance.

Israel is aware of Egypt’s increased anti-terror activities in the Sinai Peninsula, Ya’alon said, and it respects the Egyptian army’s efforts to protect its people.

“The State of Israel respects the sovereignty of Egypt and is aware of the Egyptian army’s increased activity against terror in the Sinai Peninsula,” Ya’alon said in a statement Saturday. “We will not allow rumors and speculations, which have been spreading over the last 24 hours, to harm the peace treaty between our two countries.”

Residents heard a large explosion Friday in el-Agra, an area in the northern region of Sinai close to Egypt’s border with Israel.

  16. Egypt army hits Sinai militants, at least 30 killed, injured: sources...

(Reuters) - The Egyptian army mounted a major operation against Islamist militants in North Sinai on Saturday, killing or wounding at least 30 people, security officials said.

Dozens of armored vehicles backed by attack helicopters took part in the operation near Sheikh Zuweid, a few kilometers (miles) from the Palestinian Gaza Strip. Fifteen people were detained in the operation, which the officials said targeted militants responsible for attacks on the security forces.

The operation comes two days after an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim in Cairo. Security officials say the militants behind the suicide bombing were linked to groups in the Sinai.

Hardline groups have expanded into a security vacuum that opened up in North Sinai after the downfall of veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Their attacks have escalated since July 3, when the military deposed president Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, with almost daily assaults on the security forces and other targets in the desert peninsula bordering Israel.
