Ο Αντιπρόεδρος της Κυβέρνησης και Υπουργός Εξωτερικών Ευάγγελος Βενιζέλος κατά την παρέμβαση του στη συζήτηση για τη Συρία που έλαβε χώρα στο σημερινό άτυπο Συμβούλιο των Υπουργών Εξωτερικών κρατών-μελών της Ε.Ε. προέβη στις εξής βασικές τοποθετήσεις:
- Έχουμε ένα καθαρό σημείο αφετηρίας. Καταδικάζουμε όλοι απερίφραστα τη χρήση χημικών όπλων ως ειδεχθές έγκλημα και θέλουμε όλα να κινηθούν στο πλαίσιο του Διεθνούς Δικαίου.
- Έχουμε ένα καθαρό στόχο. Να διαφυλάξουμε την πολιτική διαδικασία, την προοπτική της Γενεύης ΙΙ. Έχουμε, όμως, δύο μεγάλες δυσκολίες. Η πρώτη είναι η αδυναμία του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας να λάβει αποφάσεις. Η δεύτερη και πιο ουσιαστική είναι η ίδια η πολύπλοκη και αντιφατική κατάσταση που υπάρχει στη Συρία πριν και μετά τη χρήση χημικών όπλων. Δεν είναι εύκολο να διαμορφωθεί μια ολοκληρωμένη στρατηγική της διεθνούς κοινότητας για μία συνθετική και βιώσιμη πολιτική λύση στη Συρία.
- Αυτό είναι, όμως, που πρέπει να κάνουμε, αν θέλουμε να διαφυλάξουμε την υπόσταση της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης ως πολιτικής οντότητας, αλλά και την ευρωατλαντική εταιρική σχέση.
- Αυτή είναι η πραγματική δυσκολία και η πραγματική υποχρέωση μας: να συζητήσουμε και να αποφασίσουμε όχι μόνο την αντίδραση απέναντι στο συγκεκριμένο έγκλημα, αλλά και για τη διαμόρφωση μιας ολοκληρωμένης στρατηγικής για τη Συρία που θα οδηγεί σε πραγματική λύση.

Kerry appreciates strong statement from EU's Ashton...
ReplyDeleteVILNIUS - US Secretary of State John Kerry welcomed a European Union statement on Saturday that said there appeared to be strong evidence that the Syrian government carried out a chemical attack on civilians in August.
"We are very grateful for the statement that came out of the meeting today with respect to Syria -- a strong statement about the need for accountability," Kerry said after meeting EU foreign ministers in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius.

EU's Ashton points to "strong evidence" on Syrian gov't chemical attack...
ReplyDeleteVIlNIUS, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Catherine Ashton, the foreign policy chief of the European Union (EU), on Saturday told reporters here that strong evidence indicated the Syrian government was responsible for the chemical arm attack in the country.
"Information from wide relatives' sources confirms the existence that such an attack and seems to indicate strong evidence that a Syrian regime is responsible of this attack as is the only one that possesses chemical weapons agents and the means of the delivery in this efficient quantity," said Ashton at a press conference following a informal meeting of 15 EU foreign ministers and the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.
According to a EU statement, the meeting had focused on discussion around a military action against Syria.
Ashton said that the EU underscores at the same time the need to move forward with addressing the Syrian crisis trough UN process.
"We noted the ongoing investigation on the 21 of August attack and further investigations on other chemical weapons attacks carried out in this conflict," she said, "It helps a preliminary report of this first investigation can be released as soon as possible and welcomes (French) President (Francois) Holland statement to wait for this report before any further action."
Ashton said that only a political solution can end this terrible violation of human rights and so far the destruction of Syria, and a diplomatic process leading to a political solution is now more urgent than ever.
"The initiatives for Geneva II peace conference must move ahead swiftly," said Ashton, "The EU is ready to provide all the support needed to achieve a political settlement until work with partners and international actors in particular the UN."
