  1. Actions on Syria must be based on results of UN investigation, China's Foreign Ministry says...

BEIJING, September 2 (Itar-Tass) - The United States supplied to China data on the use of chemical weapons in Syria, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a briefing on Monday.

“China is against the use of chemical weapons by anybody and supports an independent, fair, objective and professional investigation conducted by the United Nations,” the diplomat said. “China constantly follows the developments in Syria and, as ever, believes that the Syrian question must be decided by political methods only,” he said.

“The PRC is seriously concerned over the fact that certain countries want to deal a unilateral military strike at Syria,” he said.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman noted that the international community, taking actions, must respect the United Nations Charter, the principles of that organization and the fundamental principles of international relations. The aggravation of the situation in Syria and further worsening of the situation in the Middle East should be avoided, he said.

“I do believe that any actions of the world community [regarding Syria] must be based on the results of the investigation into the use of chemical weapons, which must provide the answer as to whether chemical weapons were used in Syria and who used them,” Hong Lei said.

  2. France accuses Syria of 3 chemical attacks, Assad slams Western logic...

At least three chemical attacks were staged in Syria between April and August, a declassified French intelligence report claims, while President Bashar Assad said it was “illogical” for the government to launch a chemical weapons strike.

The declassified nine-page French intelligence report, issued by the country’s external and military services, suggests government forces loyal to President Assad were behind the attack, which took place on August 21 in eastern Ghouta, on the outskirts of Damascus.

The report alleges the strikes were directed from government-controlled areas to the east and west of Damascus and targeted rebel zones; the intelligence also describes "massive use of chemical agents" involved in the attack.

“Unlike previous attacks that used small amounts of chemicals and were aimed at terrorizing people, this attack was tactical and aimed at regaining territory," government sources commented to Reuters.

The source added that since then Assad’s forces had subsequently bombed the areas to erase evidence of strikes.

Moreover, the report alleges the Syrian government staged at least three chemical attacks since April, according to AFP, including those in the towns of Saraqib and Jobar in April. Those attacks appeared to have killed about 280 people.

The report was published on the websites of the French presidency, the Foreign Ministry and the Defense Ministry at 5 pm Paris time (7 pm GMT).

"We are going to give the MPs everything we have – classified until now – to enable every one of them to take on board the reality of the unacceptable attack," French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said Monday......http://rt.com/news/france-syria-chemical-report-324/

  4. NATO Chief Urges Response to Syria’s Alleged Chemical Attacks....

BRUSSELS, September 2 (RIA Novosti) – NATO’s chief on Monday urged the international community to undertake a tough response to the alleged use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime.

“We need a firm international response in order to avoid that chemical attacks take place in the future. It would send a very, I would say, dangerous signal to dictators all over the world if we stand idle by and don't react,” Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told journalists.

US President Barack Obama said Saturday that his country was considering a “limited” attack in Syria. According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have already died in the two-year civil war.

The United States on Friday released a report saying Syria’s government was responsible for a chemical attack that purportedly killed hundreds of civilians in a Damascus suburb late last month. The Syrian regime has consistently denied the allegation.

Asked whether resolving the Syrian conflict was a priority task for NATO, Rasmussen said the alliance had “not been seeking a role in Syria. Our main focus is effective defense and protection of our ally, Turkey.”

Speaking about a possible military operation in Syria, the NATO chief said he would “envisage a very short, measured, targeted operation.”

“And you don't need the NATO command-and-control system to conduct such a short, measured, tailored, military operation,” he said, adding that a long-term solution would require a “political process.”

Rasmussen said the Syrian government was responsible for purported chemical attacks. “The way these chemical attacks were conducted points to regime responsibility,” he said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday that Moscow, which has been Damascus’ most important ally during the civil war, denounced the use of chemical weapons and was ready for “consolidated participation in drafting measures to oppose such acts.”

However, on the same day, Putin slammed the United States, saying that Washington’s allegations about the Syrian regime’s use of chemical weapons against civilians were “unimaginable nonsense.”

On Monday, Putin backed an initiative by Russian lawmakers to establish dialogue with their US counterparts and resolve the Syria situation without the use of force.....http://en.rian.ru/politics/20130902/183126230/NATO-Chief-Urges-Response-to-Syrias-Alleged-Chemical-Attacks.html

  5. Former UN head against military solution to Syrian conflict...

STOCKHOLM, September 3 (Itar-Tass) - Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan opposes a military solution to the Syrian conflict. He made this statement delivering a lecture at Uppsala University on Monday evening.

According to Annan, the international community must stop the bloodshed, in order “to reach a political agreement and free the Syrians from the terror in which they live.” The politician believes that the international community had a chance to stop the civil war in Syria last summer. “Instead, the leaders began to quarrel and blame each other,” he stressed.

“Today, there is a debate that is necessary to punish those who had used chemical weapons in Syria. This is unacceptable and cruel. We need to deal with all those responsible,” Annan stated.
