Ο πρόεδρος Ομπάμα δήλωσε πως θα προσπαθήσει να πείσει τους Αμερικανούς σχετικά με την ανάγκη να ενεργήσει εναντίον του καθεστώτος του προέδρου Άσαντ.
«Το έθεσα ενώπιον του Κογκρέσου επειδή δεν μπορώ να ισχυριστώ με σιγουριά ότι η απειλή που αποτελεί η χρήση χημικών όπλων από τον Άσαντ εναντίον αθώων πολιτών και γυναικοπαίδων αποτελεί επικείμενη και άμεση απειλή για τις ΗΠΑ» είπε ο Ομπάμα σε συνέντευξη Τύπου στη σύνοδο της G20 στην Αγία Πετρούπολη.
Όπως είπε ο Αμερικανός πρόεδρος, εάν επρόκειτο για άμεση απειλή προς τις ΗΠΑ ή τους συμμάχους τους, θα προχωρούσε σε δράση χωρίς να ζητήσει την άδεια του Κογκρέσου.

ReplyDeleteDer US-Senat stimmt am 11. September - am 12. Jahrestag des schwersten Terroranschlags auf New York - über die Militäroperation in Syrien ab, berichtet die Zeitung "Politico" am Freitag.
Zuvor war der Resolutionsentwurf, der die US-Administration zu einem Militärschlag gegen Syrien genehmigt, vom Auswärtigen Ausschuss des Senats gebilligt worden. Die Resolution trifft in Kraft, nachdem sie auch vom Repräsentantenhaus des Kongresses gebilligt worden ist. Das Repräsentantenhaus bereitet zur Abstimmung mindestens zwei alternative Resolutionen vor.
Das vom Senat erstellte Dokument sieht eine 90-tägige Operation der US-Kräfte in Syrien vor. Das Ziel der Operation besteht darin, Syriens Präsident Baschar al-Assad um die Möglichkeit weiterer Kampfstoffeinsätze in der Zukunft zu bringen.

Obama won't attack Syria without Congress backing: U.S. official...
ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- A senior U.S. official said Friday that President Barack Obama has no intention to attack Syria without Congressional authorization.
In an interview with National Public Radio, Deputy National Security Adviser Tony Blinken said despite the fact Obama "has the authority" to act on Syria without Congressional consent, "it's neither his (Obama's) desire nor intention to use that authority absent Congress backing him."
The resolution to authorize a military action against Syria is having trouble gaining support in Congress, and Blinken said the White House is reaching out to lawmakers on the matter.
"After the events of Aug. 21 we reached out to Congress and we had conversations with members of Congress across the country and the one thing we heard from nearly all of them was that they wanted their voice heard and their votes counted," he said.

US-Außenminister John Kerry will nach dem Ende des G20-Gipfels in Europa weiter um Unterstützung für einen Militärschlag gegen Syrien werben. Mit den 28 EU-Außenministern berät er in der litauischen Hauptstadt Vilnius über eine gemeinsame Haltung im Syrien-Konflikt.
Nach Angaben von Diplomaten wollen die EU-Minister ihren US-Kollegen bitten, vor einer endgültigen Entscheidung über einen Militäreinsatz den Bericht der UN-Chemiewaffeninspekteure abzuwarten. Kerry hatte selbst angeboten, an dem informellen Treffen der EU teilzunehmen. Ursprünglich sollte es dabei vor allem um die wieder in Gang gekommenen Nahost-Friedensgespräche gehen. Auch die instabile politische Lage in Ägypten steht auf der Agenda. DeleteFrançois Hollande et Barack Obama voulaient profiter du G20 de Saint-Pétersbourg (Russie) pour élargir leur coalition favorable à une intervention militaire en Syrie après l'usage d'armes chimiques par le régime de Damas.
Mais le sommet s'est achevé vendredi 6 septembre sans progrès significatif sur ce dossier brûlant. La Russie, opposée aux frappes, n'a pas bougé d'un pouce et l'Allemagne a refusé de s'associer à un communiqué appelant à une intervention.

Kerry Lands in Europe, Seeks Support on Syria Attack...
DeleteUS Secretary of State John Kerry on Saturday sought to muster European Union support for military strikes against Syria, after a G20 summit failed to resolve bitter international divisions on the issue.
Kerry went into informal talks with the EU's 28 foreign ministers in Lithuania with the bloc itself sharply split on Syria and most nations highly reticent over military action.
EU diplomats reported intense negotiations taking place to seek a consensus on Syria with France and Denmark supportive of a US-led strike but Germany, Sweden and others refusing to endorse action without a UN mandate or a debate within a UN framework.
The talks take place after US President Barack Obama and Russian leader Vladimir Putin failed to bridge their differences at the G20 summit of top global powers in Saint Petersburg.
The world is still waiting for a much-anticipated report by United Nations inspectors on the deadly August 21 attacks that left hundreds dead.
Later Saturday, Kerry is due to fly to Paris for talks with French officials. He will meet Arab League leaders there on Sunday to update them on Syria and on progress in the Zionist-Palestinian peace process.
He will travel on to London for talks late Sunday with Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, before flying home Monday.
Pope Francis has appealed for a peaceful solution to the crisis, calling on the world to unite on Saturday in a day of fasting and prayer for Syria. He will lead the way with a five-hour vigil in St Peter's Square.

ReplyDeleteU.S. President Barack Obama denied to directly respond to a question on whether he would go ahead with the military operation in Syria in case Congress refused to approve it.
"The use of the Assad regime of chemical weapons constitutes a threat to international security," Obama told reporters during a press conference held at the conclusion of the Group of Twenty summit in St. Petersburg.
"The use of chemical weapons threatening the security of Syria neighbors, including Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Israel," he added, pointing out that it runs the risks of destabilizing the Middle East as a whole and the possibility that chemical weapons reach the hands of terrorist groups.
Obama also stressed the need to respond to the use of chemical weapons in Syria , noting that the 'no reply' would send the wrong signal to other authoritarian regimes.
He stated that he respects the principle of non - use of force without the UN Security Council approval, but this principle is not effective in light of the inability of the Security Council to act.

Νωρίτερα το Σάββατο, η άτυπη Σύνοδος των υπουργών Εξωτερικών της ΕΕ στο Βίλνιους εξέφρασε την άποψη πως υπάρχουν ισχυρές ενδείξεις ότι το συριακό καθεστώς του Μπασάρ Αλ Άσαντ έκανε χρήση χημικών στην επίθεση του Αυγούστου, και ζήτησε ισχυρή απάντηση, ωστόσο υπογράμμισε την ανάγκη να γίνει σεβαστη η διαδικασία μέσω ΟΗΕ.
«Απέναντι στην κυνική χρήση χημικών όπλων, η διεθνής κοινότητα δεν μπορεί να μείνει παθητική», δηλώνουν οι υπουργοί. «Μια σαφής και ισχυρή απάντηση είναι αναγκαία για να υπογραμμιστεί το γεγονός ότι τέτοια εγκλήματα δεν μπορούν να γίνονται αποδεκτά και να μένουν ατιμώρητα. Πρέπει να αποτρέψουμε τη δημιουργία ενός ειδεχθούς προηγούμενου για την επαναλαμβανόμενη χρήση χημικών όπλων, στη Συρία ή αλλού», προσθέτουν.

ReplyDeleteLawmakers remained sharply divided Tuesday night over how tough to get with Syria despite President Obama’s major national address, leaving an open question as to whether the president could corral the votes for a military strike should he decide to take that route.
The president backed off the military option in his speech, saying he’s asked Congress to postpone a vote while he waits for Russia-backed diplomatic talks to play out.
Some, like Tea Party favorite Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., seemed to support Obama’s plans to give diplomacy a chance, while others blasted the president for an allegedly watered-down approach and criticized his inconsistencies on how to deal with Syria......
