No Morsi supporters outside Cairo courthouse. (video)

CAIRO (AA) - Cautious calm prevailed until 6 am GMT outside the Police Academy in eastern Cairo, where ousted president Mohamed Morsi and 14 other Muslim Brotherhood and ex-presidency defendants will have their first day in court Monday.
The National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, the ousted president's main support bloc, has urged supporters to stage mass protests outside the courthouse.
The alliance, which is made up of mostly Islamist parties and pro-democracy groups, dismisses the trial as illegal.

One man waving an Egyptian flag -- apparently a critic of the ousted president -- made his presence known near the barbed-wire barriers erected by police officers around the Police Academy's gates, calling for the execution of Morsi and other Muslim Brotherhood leaders.
Police blocked the way to Gate 8 of the Police Academy, used for the entry of lawyers and Morsi's defense team.

  • - Morsi supporters show up outside Supreme Constitutional Court
CAIRO (AA) - Several supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi protested Monday morning outside Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court (SCC) in southern Cairo.
Morsi is slated to make his first public appearance since his July 3 ouster by the powerful military to face charges that he incited the killing of demonstrators outside Cairo's Ittihadiya presidential palace late last year when he was president.
Although the ousted president will stand trial in the Police Academy in eastern Cairo, many of his supporters accuse the SCC of bias against the ousted president.
Following Morsi's ouster, the army installed SCC head Adly Mansour as Egypt's interim president.
An alliance of Islamist forces and pro-democracy groups has urged Egyptians to stage mass protests against Morsi's overthrow and subsequent trial.
Security officials, meanwhile, have threatened to respond "decisively" to any perceived attempts to disrupt public order during Monday's trial.

  • - Morsi supporters, opponents clash outside Cairo courthouse

CAIRO (AA) – Fistfights erupted Monday morning between supporters and opponents of ousted President Mohamed Morsi outside the Police Academy in eastern Cairo, where Morsi will be tried on charges of inciting the killing of demonstrators late last year.
The clashes began after Morsi supporters, who began to converge on the Police Academy to show support for the ousted president, chanted slogans against army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, while Morsi's opponents demanded the deposed leader's execution.
Demonstrators from both sides intervened at one point to prevent the situation from escalating further.
Morsi supporters began converging on the trial venue in answer to earlier calls for mass protests by the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, a coalition of pro-Morsi parties and groups.
Outside the courthouse, Morsi supporters called for the downfall of Egypt's "military regime."
Morsi – along with 14 other defendants, including several high-ranking Muslim Brotherhood officials – faces charges of inciting the murder of protesters outside Cairo's Ittihadiya presidential palace late last year.
Although it will not be televised, the ousted president's Monday trial will represent Morsi's first public appearance since his ouster four months ago by the powerful military establishment.
The defendants, including Morsi, arrived to the Police Academy early Monday morning amid a massive security presence.
Trial proceedings are expected to begin imminently.

    1. Morsi arrives in court for new hearing in murder trial....

CAIRO: Egypt's deposed president Mohamed Morsi arrived at the courthouse on Wednesday for the second hearing in his murder trial, as police braced for rallies by his Islamist supporters.

Toppled by the military in July, Morsi is charged with inciting the killings of opposition activists in clashes outside the presidential palace in December 2012.

He used his first court appearance on November 4 for a show of defiance from the dock, insisting he was still the legitimate president.

He is on trial with 14 co-defendants, including former presidential aides and leaders of his Muslim Brotherhood movement.

Morsi arrived at the courthouse by helicopter, police officials said.

He and his co-defendants are being tried in a makeshift court room inside a police academy outside Cairo, the same venue being used for the trial of his deposed predecessor Hosni Mubarak on similar charges.

An Islamist coalition led by the Brotherhood had called for a "million man march" to coincide with the hearing, which is expected to start around 0800 GMT.

Morsi's trial is seen as a test for Egypt's new authorities, who have come under fire for heavy-handedness.

With more than 1,000 people killed since Morsi's overthrow and thousands of Islamists arrested, the chances of political reconciliation in the Arab world's most populous nation are ever more remote.

Morsi will also face separate trials on charges of espionage and colluding with militants to carry out attacks in Egypt..............http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/morsi-arrives-in-court/946802.html

The murder trial of Egypt's deposed president Mohamed Morsi was set to resume on Wednesday but poor weather prevented his transport to the Cairo court, police said.

Toppled by the military in July, Morsi is charged with inciting the killings of opposition activists in clashes outside the presidential palace in December 2012.

Nasr al-Abd, a senior police official in Alexandria, told AFP Morsi's helicopter had not taken off from his prison near the Mediterranean city due to poor weather conditions.

    3. Morsi's trial to resume on Feb 1....

CAIRO: The trial of Egypt's ousted Islamist president on charges of inciting the murder of protesters was adjourned on Wednesday until next month, after security officials said heavy fog grounded the helicopter meant to bring Mohamed Morsi to court.

Two defence lawyers in the case of Morsi, 13 leading Muslim Brotherhood members and an Islamist accused the government of trying to keep the toppled president out of the public eye ahead of a coming constitutional referendum. They also said authorities denied Morsi visits from his family and his defence team.

"The decision was inspired by the political circumstances_ which require that he doesn't appear,'' defence lawyer Osama el-Helw said. Morsi's "appearance will inspire his supporters.''

Wednesday's hearing was to be Morsi's second court appearance since his ouster in a popularly-backed military coup on July 3. In his first appearance, he insisted he was still the country's legitimate president and challenged the legitimacy of the court, regularly interrupting the judges and prosecutors.

Morsi is held in a high security prison in Borg el-Arab, just outside of the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, requiring him to be flown in for each of the court appearances in the outskirts of Cairo. Under Egyptian law, a defendant in a criminal trial must be in court for hearings to proceed..............http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/middle-east/Morsis-trial-to-resume-on-Feb-1/articleshow/28560892.cms

    Al Arabiya

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood lost an appeal against a court decision to ban the group, Al Arabiya’s Cairo correspondent reported Wednesday.

The verdict bans all of the group’s activities and includes seizing its funds.

Earlier in September, an Egyptian court ordered a ban on the group following the military-led ouster of Islamist President Mohammad Mursi on July 3.

  6. Egypt labels Brotherhood ‘terrorist’ group...

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood movement was declared a “terrorist organization” following a car bomb blast at a police building, which killed at least 14 people.

“Prime Minister Beblawi has declared the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization,” state news agency MENA quoted the premier’s spokesman Sherif Shawki as saying.

The condemnation of the Brotherhood comes just weeks before a referendum on a new constitution that is billed as the first major step toward democracy since the military-backed ouster of Islamist president Mohammad Mursi in July.

A car bomb had torn through a police headquarters in the Egyptian city of Mansoura early Tuesday, killing at least 14 people, mostly policemen, medics and officials told Agence France-Presse. Reuters news agency reported more than 100 people were injured in the attack.

The state-run Middle East News Agency quoted Beblawi as saying that those responsible for blast “will not escape punishment.”

On Tuesday, Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood condemned the bomb attack.

“The Muslim Brotherhood condemns in the strongest possible terms the attack on the police headquarters in Mansoura (region),” an emailed statement from the group’s London press office said, according to Reuters news agency.

“The Muslim Brotherhood considers this act as a direct attack on the unity of the Egyptian people and demands an enquiry forthwith so that the perpetrators of this crime may be brought to justice.”

Egypt’s Nile News TV cut into its late-night programming to urge people to go to hospitals to donate blood to the victims.

“The majority of the casualties are from the police. The explosion was caused by a car bomb,” Omar al-Shawatsi, the governor of Daqahleya, of which Mansoura is the capital, told state media.

The impact of the explosion was felt around 20 kilometers away and shattered windows of nearby buildings, the security sources said.

The head of security for Daqahleya, Sami El-Mihi, was wounded in the blast and two of his aides were killed, security sources said.

There has been widespread bloodshed in Egypt since Mursi’s ouster.

He was forced from power on July 3 after massive street protests against his turbulent one-year rule, with millions accusing him of power-grabbing and economic mismanagement.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in a government crackdown on his supporters, mostly from the Brotherhood.

The crackdown has also seen thousands of Islamists, including the entire leadership of the Brotherhood, arrested..............http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2013/12/24/Egypt-s-PM-labels-Brotherhood-terrorist-group-.html

    2. Kerry ‘concerned’ over Brotherhood crackdown in Egypt....

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed concern Thursday on Egypt's intensified crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood after declaring the organization a terrorist group.

While in a phone call with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nabil Fahmy, Kerry denounced the suicide bombing in Mansuora on Tuesday and the subsequent Thursday bus bombing in Cairo, he expressed reservations on designation the Muslim Broterhood as a terrorist group and the resulting detentions, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.

During the phone call, Kerry and Fahmy "agreed that there can be no place for violence in Egypt and that the Egyptian people deserve peace and calm," Psaki said.

In Washington, a U.S. official said that the administration of President Barack Obama was not considering labeling the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

The official said that despite its concerns over the interim government's latest actions, it was not planning to take any action against Egypt.

Egypt attributes the Tuesday attack, which was claimed by a jihadist group, on former president Mohammad Mursi's Muslim Brotherhood.

The Brotherhood has historically been Egypt's best organized political and social movement.

The group still protests almost daily despite the death of more than 1,000 pro-Mursi supporters and the detainment of thousands more, including the organization's top leadership.
