Speaking to reporters on Monday, the officials said public statements from Iran about the conference, known as Geneva II, fall "well short" of what is required for Tehran's participation. They said that the United Nations must rescind the invitation unless that changes. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter by name. But, their comments tracked with a statement the state department issued on Sunday.
The officials spoke after Iran's foreign ministry said earlier Monday that it would attend without preconditions.

ReplyDeleteWASHINGTON - The United States insisted on Monday it expects the United Nations to withdraw an invitation to Iran to attend Syrian peace talks unless Tehran fully supports a 2012 agreement that establishes a transition government in Syria.
A senior State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the chance of the Jan. 22 peace conference going ahead was still "fluid" given Iran had not fully endorsed the Geneva 1 agreement from 2012 to end the conflict.
The official said Iran was providing substantial military and economic support for President Bashar Assad and Tehran's participation in peace talks would not be helpful.
"They are doing nothing to de-escalate tensions ... and their actions have actually aggravated them, and so the idea that they would come to the conference refusing to acknowledge support for Geneva 1, we do not see how it could be helpful," the official said.

Syria Peace Talks Will Be a Sham Without Iran – Russia...
DeleteMOSCOW, January 20 (RIA Novosti) – This week’s peace talks in Geneva on the ongoing conflict in Syria will be a sham without Iran’s participation, Russia’s foreign minister said Monday as the main Syrian opposition group threatened to boycott talks attended by the Iranians.
“Forty countries have been invited to the Geneva 2 talks … And if Iran is excluded from the list then the conference will resemble something profane,” Sergei Lavrov said.
“Iran, of course, along with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, Turkey, Egypt and Iraq, is one of the countries interested in resolving the situation without further damaging the stability of this important region of the world.”
Ban Ki-moon, the UN Secretary General, announced Sunday at a news conference that an invitation from the UN to attend the conference had been extended to Iran.
The Syrian National Coalition, the country’s Western-backed opposition group, said Monday it would not attend if representatives from Iran were at the meeting.
The United States insisted that Iran has failed to meet the requirements for participants, which include supporting the establishment of a transitional government.
“If Iran does not fully and publicly accept the Geneva communique, the invitation must be rescinded,” the US State Department said in a statement Sunday.
The US reiterated its concerns about Iran’s continuing support of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime.
The talks are scheduled to begin Wednesday in Montreux before moving to Geneva. Representatives from several dozen countries as well as the EU, UN, Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation are expected to attend.

DeleteΑν στη λίστα των συμμετεχόντων στην ειρηνευτική διάσκεψη Γενεύη ΙΙ, όπου υπάρχουν τουλάχιστον 40 κράτη, μεταξύ των οποίων η Αυστραλία, το Μεξικό, η Δημοκρατία της Κορέας, η Βραζιλία, η Ινδία και η Ινδονησία, δεν συγκαταλέγεται το Ιράν, «αυτό θα είναι βεβήλωση» δήλωσε ο Σεργκέι Λαβρόφ. «Η διάσκεψη θα ξεκινήσει τις εργασίες της στις 22 Ιανουαρίου. Θα ήταν ανεύθυνο να αγνοήσουμε τις χώρες εκείνες στις οποίες η διευθέτηση του συριακού θα έχει άμεσο αντίκτυπο», τόνισε ο Ρώσος υπουργός Εξωτερικών και πρόσθεσε: «Υποστηρίζουμε την προσέγγιση του γενικού γραμματέα των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, ο οποίος προσκάλεσε όλες τις χώρες, συμπεριλαμβανομένου του Ιράν». Συμμετοχή του Ιράν στη Γενεύη ΙΙ
Υπενθυμίζεται ότι χθες, Κυριακή 19 Ιανουαρίου, ο γενικός γραμματέας των Ηνωμένων Εθνών Μπαν Κι Μουν δήλωσε ότι έχουν σταλεί προσκλήσεις στο Ιράν και σε άλλες εννέα χώρες προκειμένου να συμμετάσχουν στη διάσκεψη για την ειρηνική διευθέτηση του συριακού ζητήματος Γενεύη ΙΙ. Αργότερα, η ηγεσία της συριακής αντιπολίτευσης δήλωσε ότι αρνείται να συμμετάσχει στο συνέδριο. «Ενημερώσαμε επίσημα τον Λακντάρ Μπραχίμι (ειδικός απεσταλμένος του ΟΗΕ και του Αραβικού Συνδέσμου για τη Συρία) ότι σε περίπτωση που το Ιράν προσκληθεί στο συνέδριο εμείς δεν θα λάβουμε μέρος σε αυτό», είπε χαρακτηριστικά ο εκπρόσωπος της Εθνικής Συμμαχίας της Συρίας Αχμεντ Ραμαντάν.

ReplyDeleteEl día en que ha entrado en vigor el acuerdo nuclear con Irán vuelve la tensión entre Estados Unidos y el régimen de Teherán. Esta vez por la conferencia de paz sobre Siria y el dudoso papel del Gobierno iraní, aliado de Bashar Asad.
El secretario general de la ONU, Ban Ki Moon, invitó el domingo formalmente a Irán a las conversaciones que empiezan este miércoles en Montreux, en Suiza. Pero Irán no ha aceptado hasta ahora la exigencia de la comunidad internacional de que Asad abandone el poder y los líderes de la oposición moderada amenazan con no asistir a la conferencia mientras Irán figure entre los invitados y no cambie de posición. El Departamento de Estado de Estados Unidos dijo este domingo y repitió este lunes que Irán "no cumple con las condiciones" para estar en Suiza.
Desoyendo las quejas de Estados Unidos y de la oposición siria, Ban asegura que Irán promete jugar un "papel constructivo" en las conversaciones de paz y que varios representantes del Gobierno de Hasán Ruhaní le han comentado en privado que aceptan la creación de un gobierno de transición. Sin embargo, este lunes el Ministerio de Exteriores iraní insistió en que había rechazado "cualquier condición" para participar en la reunión. Estados Unidos dice que espera ahora que la ONU "retire" su invitación.
La Casa Blanca, muy 'preocupada'
Irán se resiste a apoyar la declaración de Ginebra de junio de 2012, salida de la anterior conferencia de paz y en que se llama a formar un gobierno de transición y a convocar unas elecciones libres. "Si Irán no acepta completa y públicamente el comunicado de Ginebra, la invitación debe ser suspendida", dijo Jen Psaki, portavoz del Departamento de Estado, este domingo.
