Putin orders surprise drills in two military districts

Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Defence Ministry to hold surprise military exercises to check combat readiness of armed forces in Western and Central Military Districts.

Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Defence Ministry to hold surprise military exercises to check combat readiness of armed forces in Western and Central Military Districts as well as several branches of the armed forces, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday.


“According to the orders given by the Russian president, troops in the Western Military District, detachments and military units deployed in the district, the 2nd Army of the Central Military District, the Command of Aerospace Defence Troops, Airborne Troops, long-range and military transport aviation were suddenly put on alert at 14:00 Moscow time (10:00 GMT),” Shoigu said at a meeting in the Defence Ministry.

    Le président russe Vladimir Poutine a ordonné mercredi une inspection surprise des troupes des districts militaires de l'Ouest, non loin de l'Ukraine, et du Centre pour vérifier leur aptitude au combat, a indiqué le ministre de la Défense Sergueï Choïgou.

    "Le commandant en chef a été chargé de vérifier l'aptitude des troupes à agir pour faire face à des situations de crise menaçant la sécurité militaire du pays", a déclaré Sergueï Choïgou, cité par l'agence Interfax. Les troupes du district militaire de l'Ouest - un vaste territoire à la frontière de l'Ukraine, du Bélarus, des Etats baltes, de la Finlande et de l'Arctique - ainsi que la deuxième armée du district militaire du Centre, le commandement de la défense spatiale et les troupes aéroportées ont été "mis en alerte à 14h00", a-t-il indiqué.

    L'opération durera jusqu'au 3 mars, a-t-il précisé. Cette annonce intervient en pleine crise en Ukraine, qui inquiète les autorités russes. Toutefois, Vladimir Poutine a déjà ordonné à plusieurs reprises des inspections surprise des troupes russes depuis son retour au Kremlin en 2012, la dernière, visant les troupes d'Extrême-Orient, avait eu lieu en juillet dernier.

    La Russie a également renforcé sa flotte en Crimée. "Nous étudions attentivement ce qui se passe en Crimée et autour de la flotte de la mer Noire", a déclaré le ministre, Sergueï Choïgou, cité par les agences russes.     Während Putin die Einsatzbereitschaft seiner Armee im Westen prüft, warnt die Nato vor einer Eskalation. Die Souveränität der Ukraine müsse respektiert werden – "von allen, die es betrifft".

    Diplomatische, aber deutliche Worte hat Nato-Generalsekretär Anders Fogh Rasmussen zu Beginn des Verteidigungsministertreffens in Brüssel gefunden. "Wir sehen es als gegeben an, dass alle Staaten die Souveränität und Unabhängigkeit und territoriale Unversehrtheit der Ukraine respektieren", sagte Rasmussen. Das habe das Bündnis auch gegenüber anderen deutlich gemacht und die Botschaft allen übermittelt, "die es betrifft".

    Der Nato-Generalsekretär stellt sich damit schützend vor ein Partnerland. Die Sorge gilt dem rasanten und teilweise unüberschaubaren politischen Wandel in dem Land – und einer möglichen Ausbreitung des innerukrainischen Konflikts um die Ausrichtung Kiews und um den Einfluss Russlands über die Grenzen der Ukraine hinaus.   6. Russian Fleet Poses No Threat to Ukraine – Senior Official....

    MOSCOW, February 27 (RIA Novosti) – A senior Russian defense official said Thursday that the country’s Black Sea Fleet poses no threat to Ukraine and its activities are in compliance with standing agreements between the two countries.

    “Currently all units are engaged in their daily routines, including combat training. These actions do not represent a threat,” Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov told reporters.
