Syrian minister says UN aid chief's comments "absolutely unacceptable"

GENEVA - Syria's government is doing its best to improve humanitarian aid access, Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad said on Friday, a day after United Nations aid chief Valerie Amos urged the UN Security Council to act to improve access.
"While we have done our best and will continue to do our best, I think some of her statements were absolutely unacceptable," Mekdad told a news conference in Geneva.

"Mrs Amos, in many of her statements does not recognize that there is terrorism in Syria and there are terrorist organizations which are hindering the movement of goods and humanitarian assistance to many parts of Syria in addition to ignoring very important places where the assistance should go."

  1. Russia accuses US of sabotaging Syria talks....

Meeting "going in circles," Russian foreign minister says, as UN warns of Syrian military build-up in rebel-held town.

Russia's foreign minister has accused the United States of using peace talks to seek "regime change" in Syria.

Speaking in Moscow on Friday, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the issue of a transitional government, a key focus for opposition negotiators, must not dominate the talks in Switzerland.

"We have an impression that those backing the opposition in this process... had in mind only one thing, regime change," Lavrov said, noting the talks were "going in circles."...........http://www.aljazeera.com/news/middleeast/2014/02/russia-accuses-us-sabotaging-syria-talks-201421411236816625.html

  2. The top UN official for humanitarian aid, Valerie Amos, who oversaw international relief efforts in Syria and other trouble spots, is stepping down, Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday....

Amos had been in the key post for more than four years, overseeing major aid operations in Syria as well as in South Sudan, Iraq and the Central African Republic.

Her departure comes as the United Nations is struggling to cope with a record 50 million people displaced from conflict.

Amos will stay on in her post as under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator until March.

No reason was given for her departure, but a UN official told AFP "she feels it's time to move on" after having been in the position since August 2010.

Ban expressed gratitude and praised Amos for the extensive experience she brought to the post..................http://english.ahram.org.eg/NewsContent/2/9/116547/World/International/UN-top-aid-official-Valerie-Amos-to-step-down.aspx
