Britain not considering military options for Ukraine crisis so far. -William Hague

Britain has not entertained military options so far for the Ukraine crisis, but there would be "far-reaching economic consequences" for Russia if it does not find a way to ease tensions over the Ukraine situation, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Monday.

"We're not looking at military options here, this is not a Crimean war. We have not entertained military options so far," Hague was quoted by BBC Radio 4 as saying on Monday.

The Council of the European Union (EU) on Monday adopted sanctions, including travel bans and assets freeze, against 21 persons, identifying them as "responsible for actions threatening Ukraine's territorial integrity."

Hague said there will be a "real resolve" across Western nations to take wider trade, financial and economic sanctions if Russia "moves into eastern Europe."

"These are measures we are taking today and for the coming months, but for years to come if Russia does not find some way to de-escalate this, to directly negotiate with Ukraine and to work with other nations. There will be important costs for Russia," he said.

"I wouldn't describe it as a new Cold War, but of course this will depend on the course of events over the coming days," Hague added, commenting on the seriousness of the crisis.

The foreign secretary also noted that diplomatic channels remain open to Russia.

His remarks came after an overwhelming majority of voters in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea opted for reunification with Russia in a referendum held on Sunday on whether to join Russia or remain part of Ukraine as an autonomous republic.

Following the vote, the Crimean parliament declared independence from Ukraine and applied to join Russia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin insisted on Sunday in a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the Crimea referendum breach no international law and Moscow will respect the choice of local residents.
