Putin’s spokesman ironical about Western countries’ mediation attempts in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov was ironical about Western countries’ attempts to offer mediation in the talks on Ukraine, which has been in political turmoil since its legitimate leader Viktor Yanukovich was ousted in an armed uprising in February.

“Now Europe can be heard calling on Russia to hold talks with people from Kiev, who call themselves Ukraine’s authorities, with mediation from Western countries,” Peskov said Thursday.

“We can smile to that,” he said live on the Rossiya 1 TV channel, adding that “the credit of confidence in these guarantors is probably exhausted.

  1. Following Western logic, any gov't installed by extremists recognizable - Kremlin...

President Vladimir Putin's spokesman has ridiculed the recognition of Ukraine's current government by the West.

"If one follows the logic of the West, from now on any government that has been brought in on the bayonets of armed extremists may be recognized," Dmitry Peskov said in a program on Russia's Rossiya 1 television on Friday.

"Unfortunately, we can have no other interpretation of the position taken by our Western partners."

  2. Ukraine crisis 'created artificially' - Russia's Lavrov...

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said the crisis in Ukraine was "created artificially for purely geopolitical reasons".

He confirmed Russia had contacts with Ukraine's interim government but said Kiev was beholden to the radical right.

Russia, he said, was open to further dialogue with the West if it was "honest and partner-like".

Ukraine's interim Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya said he saw hopeful signs Russia might engage in talks.

"We have not sat and talked with Russians but we managed to send our message through intermediaries," he said in Kiev.

"Russia's position is not categorical, they are accepting this proposal and are considering it, so, there is some hope."

He said it was too early to give more details of the proposal............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-26495378
