Russia blast Kerry remarks about Ukraine as 'unacceptable' . -Russia gives Ukrainian forces in Crimea ultimatum to surrender

MOSCOW - The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that recent remarks by US Secretary of State John Kerry contained threats against Russia and were "unacceptable".
Kerry on Sunday condemned what he called Russia's "incredible act of aggression" in Ukraine after Russian forces took control of the Crimea region and parliament gave President Vladimir Putin consent to send the military into Ukraine.

  • Russia gives Ukrainian forces in Crimea ultimatum to surrender
KIEV - Russia's Black Sea Fleet has told Ukrainian forces in Crimea to surrender by 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Tuesday or face a military assault, Interfax news agency quoted a source in the Ukrainian Defense Ministry as saying.

The ultimatum, Interfax said, was issued by Alexander Vitko, the fleet's commander.

The ministry did not immediately confirm the report and there was no immediate comment by the Black Sea Fleet, which has a base in Crimea, where Russian forces are in control.

"If they do not surrender before 5 a.m. tomorrow, a real assault will be started against units and divisions of the armed forces across Crimea," the agency quoted the ministry source as saying.

  1. Ukrainian CEC: referendum in Crimea not possible....

Crimean parliament on Monday officially changed the date of the referendum on the autonomy’s status and powers from May 25 to March 30

KIEV, March 03, 21:24 /ITAR-TASS/. No referendum in Crimea (autonomy within Ukraine) is possible, the Ukrainian Central Election Commission said on Monday, March 3.

“Under effective Ukrainian legislation no local referendum may be called, prepared and conducted,” the commission’s press service said.

No effective Ukrainian law sets the procedure for conducting local referendums, it said. “Therefore, there is no mechanism for exercising the right of citizens to make decisions of local importance by conducting a local referendum. Under current regulations, any local referendum would be impossible,” the Central Election Commission said.

Article 92 of the Ukrainian Constitution says that “issues of organising and conducting elections and referendums are regulated exclusively by Ukrainian laws” and the Law “On All-Ukrainian and Local Referendums,” which in 1991 regulated issues of initiating and conducting local referendums, is no longer valid..............http://en.itar-tass.com/world/721862

  2. Russia asks Ukrainian navy to surrender...

Ukrainian navy forces in Crimea are told to surrender by 3GMT on Tuesday or face a military assault.

Russian forces that have surrounded the military bases in Ukraine’s autonomous region of Crimea have given ultimatum to Ukrainian navy forces there to surrender, according to the headquarters of the Ukrainian navy in Sevastopol.

A commander at the headquarters confirmed to Al Jazeera the ultimatum from Russian forces to lay down their weapons, adding that the ultimatum includes two main bases in the region and ships patrolling the bays of Kurinaya and Streletskaya.

The headquarters did not confirm if the ultimatum only includes the navy or the whole Ukrainian military forces in Crimea.

Al Jazeera correspondents in Kiev and Crimea say that the ultimatum is likely to include the whole Ukrainian army forces in Crimea..............http://www.aljazeera.com/news/europe/2014/03/russia-asks-ukrainian-navy-surrender-20143315502236327.html

    1. Source: Sevastopol residents are not going to storm the Ukrainian Navy headquarters....

Hundreds of activists and people’s volunteers as well as ordinary people who have gathered outside the Ukrainian Navy headquarters in Sevastopol, have said they are not going to storm its building but will block its work by using correct methods. Their aim is to force everybody who is inside to leave the building.

“Our task is quite simple. We want the people who are inside to leave the building and not to interfere with the work of the newly-formed Crimean naval force,” Ivan Komelov, a member of the Sevastopol City Council, told Itar-Tass on Monday, adding that the work of the new military unit set up on Sunday was being sabotaged.

Volunteers, members of self-defence units and ordinary people who set up a picket outside the Ukrainian Navy headquarters, have pledged not to disperse so long as the Ukrainian Navy servicemen do not leave the building.

“They are going to get out of their sooner or later, and we will not let them back. The man who has introduced himself as a newly-appointed commander of the Ukrainian Navy (Sergei Gaiduk) should leave the city’s territory because the people of Sevastopol will never recognize the power imposed by him,” Komelov said, adding the protesters would continue blocking the headquarters without causing damage to the building and avoiding provocations...................http://en.itar-tass.com/world/721868
