Vote on Ukraine resolution in UN GA shows Russia not in isolation. -Vitaly Churkin (video UN)

The results of the vote on the Ukraine resolution in the UN General Assembly on Thursday, March 27, show that Russia is not in isolation, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said.
“This is a rather good result for us. We have earned a moral and political victory. There can be no question of Russia’s isolation in this situation,” the diplomat said.
The resolution against the secession referendum in Crimea, which was part of Ukraine but seceded from it and reunited with Russia last week, was passed by a 100-11 vote with 58 abstentions.

Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Venezuela, Cuba, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Zimbabwe, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, and Sudan voted against the resolution.
The document urges countries not to recognize Crimea’s accession to Russia after the referendum held on March 16.

  • Unlike UN Security Council resolutions, those adopted by the UN General Assembly are not binding and are advisory in nature.
The resolution is “confrontational in nature”, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said. “Russia’s attitude towards the proposed draft resolution is negative,” he said before the vote in the UN General Assembly.
Churkin believes that the document “is trying to call into doubt the significance of the referendum in Crimea, which has already played its historic role”.

  1. No reasonable alternative to energy supplies from Russia to EU — German vice chancellor....

The deliveries of natural gas from Russia to the European Union “have no reasonable alternative,” German Vice Chancellor, Minister of Economics and Energy Sigmar Gabriel said on Thursday evening at an energy forum in Osnabruck, organized by the Neue Osnabrucker Zeitung newspaper.

According to him, at discussions on Europe’s dependence on Russian natural gas and oil “it is often concluded that there are many other possibilities (for getting energy resources).” However, it is not so, stated the chairman of the German Social Democratic Party that is part of the government coalition in Germany.

Gabriel also warned against “panic sentiments”. “Even during the ‘cold war’ Russia had observed the concluded agreements,” the German vice chancellor stressed.

German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel for her part called for “reducing the dependence” of the European Union from energy supplies from Russia. Talking to reporters in Berlin on Thursday after a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Steven Harper, she said that “the hole energy policy (of the European Union) will be reconsidered.”

The head of the German government said that it would be done because the EU is “highly” dependent on Russian oil and gas. And Germany’s dependence “has long been not the greatest anymore,” Merkel said.

  2. Cypriot MPs demand gov'y not to join any sanctions against Russia...

The House of Representatives of Cyprus (the Cypriot Parliament) adopted a resolution by a majority vote Thursday urging the government to oppose sanctions or other moves that could damage Cyprus’s relations with Russia.

The resolution points out that the authorities will put at risk the country’s vitally important interests by putting in jeopardy the extremely important ties with Russia, which invariably supports the Republic of Cyprus at critical moments of the insular state.

Some 30 deputies of all opposition parties voted for the resolution, one lawmaker of the ruling party voted against, while 15 others abstained.

  3. African states overwhelmingly reject anti-Russian resolution at UN. - Russian MP...

Special Representative of the Russian President for Cooperation with African States Mikhail Margelov has welcomed the refusal of most African states to back the UN General Assembly resolution on Ukraine.

Margelov recalled that 31 out of 47 African countries said "no".

"It is easy to imagine what pressure the West has put on these countries and what conditions have been set for their approval of the anti-Russian resolution. But the West failed to achieve unity and consolidation," Margelov, who is also the Chairman of the Federation Council International Affairs Committee, told Interfax.

In his opinion, that unity was unattainable because times had changed: the rule of achieving more with political and economic blackmail than with "a mere good word" and deed stopped working.

"They cannot isolate Russia. I have recently attended a session of the Pan-African Parliament, which discussed the situation in Crimea and Ukraine amongst other issues," he said.......Read more: http://voiceofrussia.com/news/2014_03_28/African-states-overwhelmingly-reject-anti-Russian-resolution-at-UN-Russian-MP-5968/
