US, UK, Germany, Italy and France leaders call for new sanctions against Russia

Leaders of the US, UK, Germany, Italy and France spoke in favor of the adoption of new sanctions against Russia, Elysee Palace announces. The statement says that the French president Francois Hollande held telephone talks with US President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, prime ministers of Italy and the UK Matteo Renzi and David Cameron.

"The Heads of State and Government called for the country's "seven" to the rapid reaction (developments in Ukraine) and pointed at the possibility to new sanctions against Russia," statement reports.

Germany forced to consider expanding sanctions against Russia because of the lack of progress in Ukraine. This statement was made today by German Chancellor Angela Merkel at a press conference with Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

  1. UK Prime Minister David Cameron has claimed that Russia is “refusing” to support the April-17 Geneva agreements on the de-escalation of the conflict in Ukraine....

Cameron’s spokesman was quoted by Reuters as saying that the UK Prime Minister, US President Barack Obama, French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Friday agreed on additional sanctions against Russia during a conference call.

“While they continued to hold open the door to a diplomatic resolution of this crisis, based on the Geneva agreement, the five leaders agreed that in the light of Russia's refusal to support the process, an extension of the current targeted sanctions would need to be implemented, in conjunction with other G7 leaders and with European partners,” Cameron’s spokesman said. ......http://rt.com/news/kiev-clashes-rioters-police-571/

  2. Readout of the President’s Call with President Hollande, Chancellor Merkel, Prime Minister Renzi, and Prime Minister Cameron...

Today the President spoke with President Hollande of France, Chancellor Merkel of Germany, Prime Minister Renzi of Italy, and Prime Minister Cameron of the UK to consult about the alarming situation in eastern Ukraine. The leaders noted the positive steps that Ukraine had taken to move forward on the actions to which it committed in the April 17 joint statement by Ukraine, Russia, the European Union, and the United States – including proposing an amnesty law for those who will peacefully leave the buildings they have seized in eastern Ukraine, supporting the work of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and committing themselves once again to a process of constitutional reform and decentralization. The leaders also agreed that Russia had not reciprocated – including by not publicly supporting the Geneva accord, nor calling on armed militant groups to lay down their arms and leave the government buildings they’ve occupied – and had in fact continued to escalate the situation through its increasingly concerning rhetoric and threatening military exercises on Ukraine’s border.

The President noted that the United States is prepared to impose targeted sanctions to respond to Russia's latest actions. The leaders agreed to work closely together, and through the G7 and European Union, to coordinate additional steps to impose costs on Russia. The leaders underscored that Russia could still choose a peaceful resolution to the crisis, including by implementing the Geneva accord.

  3. U.S. readies more sanctions on Russia over Ukraine...

(Reuters) - The United States said on Friday it was prepared to impose further targeted sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine and that European leaders had agreed to coordinate on steps to make Moscow pay.

The crisis escalated when armed pro-Russian separatists in the eastern city of Slaviansk seized a bus carrying international mediators. A separatist leader said the mediators were believed to have a Kiev "spy" amongst them.

The White House said U.S. President Barack Obama and European allies all felt that Russia had escalated tension in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Moscow separatists have refused to leave official buildings they have occupied.

But it gave no details of what the sanctions might be, or when it planned to enact them............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/25/us-ukraine-crisis-idUSBREA3O16720140425?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews
