Journalists in Ukraine are treated as terrorists

Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has called on Ukraine not to limit freedom of speech by imposing sanctions.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian Parliament cleared a bill to impose sanctions against Russia in first reading. Some of the measures concern the prohibition or restriction of broadcasts by television and radio stations, the activities of a number of media, even on the Internet. In Ukraine foreign journalists are still being hunted. The fate of Andrei Stenin, photojournalist of the International Information Agency "Russia Today” remains unclear more than a week after his disappearance.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Press, Dunja Mijatovic, demanded from Kiev to withdraw from the package of sanctions against Russia clauses about restrictive measures against the media. The intentions of the Ukrainian lawmakers threaten freedom and pluralism of the media, and are contrary to OSCE commitments that Kiev recently undertook in the hope of integration into the EU, says Pavel Svyatenkov, a leading expert of the historical perspective,.

“Kiev is engaged in an information war, and, of course, they do not need competitors in this war. So they made it a rule to close foreign media, namely the Russian media, and restrict the activities of uncontrollable journalists.”

Censorship in the media space of Ukraine is attributed to the concern for national security, and reporters are equated with terrorists. Journalists from Russian television networks "Star" and “Life News” were captured by the Ukrainian security forces on charges of subversion. They were tortured and beaten. Their release became possible only through the intervention of top officials of the Russia and some Western nations and the support of international media organizations. RTR and Channel one journalists could not be rescued - they were killed because they were doing their job.

  • Andrei Stenin, photojournalist of the agency "Russia Today" has been reported missing since August 5 in the south-east of Ukraine. Kiev did not answer any official request from the Russian Federation and international human rights organizations about the fate of Andrei Stenin. But on Tuesday, in an interview with the Latvian radio Baltkom, the Adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko said that the Russian photojournalist was arrested by the local security forces as "what he was doing is not journalism, but abetment and glorification of terrorism." Later the adviser to the Ukrainian minister tried to retract his words. But audio interview is a fact that is not disputed. In general, the statement of the representative of the Kiev authorities indicates their attitude to the work of the press. Whatever is in discord with the official version is declared a threat to national security with all its consequences, emphasizes Pavel Svyatenkov.

“ In Ukraine, the takeover of power by the people who came to rule the country dictates power ethics. They are trying to stifle dissent. Note that this applies not just to the media, but also to unwanted political parties. For example, the Communist Party of Ukraine is under attack and its faction in the Verkhovna Rada (Ukrainian parliament) has been disbanded. This means that the politicians who came to power in Ukraine as a result of a coup are trying to consolidate their position by force. This explains the persecution of the media.

In a democracy, citizens must have free access to any information, regardless of its source.

But what kind of democracy in Ukraine can we speak about if the power was usurped in an armed coup, which was then followed by repression of dissent.
