Cabinet chief Jorge Capitanich defended Argentina’s efforts to increase food exports to Russia today, amid accusations from the European Union (EU) that Buenos Aires is taking advantage of the bloc’s sanctions against Moscow over the Ukrainian conflict.
“We have no impediment whatsoever for trade agreements to boost production and export levels,” Capitanich stated when asked about reports of a letter allegedly sent by the EU to complain for Argentina’s trade policies towards Russia.
“Argentina trades with the US, the EU, Russia, China, as well as with many Southamerican, African and Asian countries,” the chief of ministers said in his daily press briefing at government house. “We have the Russian Federation as a possible export destination indeed,” he added.
Moscow has announced a one-year embargo on meat, fish, dairy, fruit and vegetables from the United States, the European Union (EU), Canada, Australia and Norway in retaliation for Western economic sanctions over Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, improving Argentina’s chances to place its products in the Russian market.
