Iranian FM, Javad Zarif, slams US for 'theatrical acts' in dealing with terrorism

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif slammed Washington for supporting the Islamic State in fighting the Assad regime in Syria and criticized America's lack of effectiveness in quelling the Islamist group, according to reports by Iranian state run media.

“Owing to their double-standards, the Americans have not been so serious in fighting the Islamic Sate up until today; they supported Islamic State in Syria in different forms for a long time and now cannot decide what to do with the slogans they have chanted for such a long time,” Zarif said in an interview with Iran’s state-run TV on Sunday, referring to the US’ stated policy of support for anti-Damascus militant groups to topple President Bashar Assad’s government.

Zarif said that Iranian officials had realized the danger posed by Islamic State's "since the very first day" and supported the Iraqi people against the terrorist group to prevent the spread of its activities but that the US and other western states would need to gather "a serious understanding" of the dangers posed by the Islamic State before they could made a decision to fight the group.

  1. US, Iran unlikely to join against IS, says ex-Mossad chief...

Open support for jihadist movement growing among Israeli Arabs, worrying local communities.

Although the US has already conducted numerous airstrikes in recent weeks, Halevy said it is still too early to see the American military deployed in a ground operation.

However, alongside the continued intensive air assault, Halevy predicted widespread commando missions by US special forces.

“I think the Americans concluded that it wouldn’t look good to have a massive entry of military forces to Iraq or Syria to beat IS,” he said. “They are putting their trust in special actions with special forces, but in a wide scope. We are not talking about a few individual missions, but many missions of this kind.”

Israel, he said, must also be alert to the situation, not so much because of the IS forces battling the Syrian army for control of areas right along Israel’s border in the Golan, but rather due to supporters of the group within its borders.

“There are indications of sympathy for IS among Israeli citizens,” he said. “When there is a background of sympathy there is usually also individuals who go on to broader activities.”

Israel also needs to keep an eye on Jordan and the Gaza Strip, he said, “even though in Gaza there is an effective deterrent to IS — Hamas.”............http://www.timesofisrael.com/us-iran-unlikely-to-join-against-is-says-ex-mossad-chief/#ixzz3CeELkCzR
