Mercosur Parliament rejects British control of Malvinas Islands

The Parliament of Mercosur (Parlasur) has reaffirmed its opposition to the United Kingdom's control of the disputed Malvinas Islands, in an extraordinary session of the body which described the issue as a colonial conflict of "global" importance.

Legislators representing Mercosur members Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela slammed the UK's refusal to negotiate over the future of the archipelago as an "anachronistic colonial position," which was injustifiable under any circumstances.

The Parliament also criticised the "militarisation" of the Malvinas by British forces, as well as what it dubbed the "illegal" exploitation of hydrocarbon and fishing resources in the area. A declaration of support for Argentina's position on the matter was unanimously passed, in the presence of Foreign minister Héctor Timerman and his Uruguayan counterpart Luis Almagro.

"I would like to thank this session for highlighting an extremely important issue for my country, in which everyone has shown their support and made it clear that this is a regional issue," Timerman told the Mercosur lawmakers today.

"The United Kingdom invaded Argentine land with the sole motive of possessing a territory with strategic advantage, to control interoceanic passes... and now they have there the biggest military base in the world south of the 50th parallel, they sell hydrocarbons and empty the seas giving fishing licenses.

"The clothes are different, but it is the same plan," the minister underlined during his speech.
