US welcomes China-Japan agreement.("positive step")

The United States on Friday welcomed a four-point agreement reached by China and Japan to improve bilateral ties.

"We would welcome the statement between China and Japan that outlines agreed steps to improve relations," State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki said at a daily news briefing, calling it a "positive step."

"As two of the three largest economies in the world, relations between the two countries affect the peace and prosperity of not only the region but the world," she explained.

In the agreement inked Friday in Beijing, China and Japan agreed to resume political, diplomatic and security dialogue while acknowledging different positions on the Diaoyu Islands.

Japan's attempt to whitewash its war-time history and a territorial row over the Diaoyu Islands in East China Sea have chilled political relations between Tokyo and Beijing, a development that has in turn taken a toll on bilateral trade between the world's second and third largest economies.

China said on Saturday it hopes Japan can create a favorable atmosphere for an expected meeting between the two countries' leaders, a day after the two sides signaled willingness to put a bitter row over disputed islands on the back burner.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks at a briefing ahead of a meeting by leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group in Beijing.

Asked about a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Wang said that "China attaches importance to Japan's repeated requests".

"We hope that the Japanese side takes this seriously, implement it faithfully and honor its commitment so as to create a necessary and favorable atmosphere for a meeting between the two leaders," he added.
