Ten injured after driver ploughs van into French Christmas market

PARIS: At least 10 people were injured on Monday (Dec 22), two seriously, when the driver of a van ploughed into a Christmas market in the western French city of Nantes before stabbing himself, a source close to the investigation said.
The source said the driver, who was born in 1970, then stabbed himself "at least nine times", causing himself serious injuries. The motives for the attack were unclear but did not appear to be driven by religious extremism. "As things stand, we have no account pointing to any religious demands," said the source.

The incident comes a day after a man shouting "Allahu Akbar" ran his car into pedestrians in the eastern city of Dijon, injuring 13.

The driver in that case was suffering from a severe psychological disorder, a local prosecutor said.

Monday's attack in central Nantes took place at around 7.00pm (2am Singapore time Tuesday). The driver charged at a chalet serving hot wine in front of which several people were gathered, a witness told AFP.

  2. 10 injured as man drives van into Christmas fair in Nantes, France ...

At least ten people were injured, two gravely, as a minivan crashed into a Christmas market in Nantes, local media report. The driver attempted to stab himself to death following the crash, a second such incident in the country over the last two days.

Reports on the number of injured are conflicting with Le Figaro suggesting there are 17 casualties, while Focusur.fr reports at least 12 were injured and five are in serious condition.

A 25-year-old man "deliberately" drove the van into the market crowded with families and kids, local media say. After that he attempted to take his life, stabbing himself in the chest several times. A source close to the investigation told AFP that the man was seriously injured but alive. He was taken to hospital.

Witnesses told L'Express the man was shouting "Allahu Akbar". Now media reports suggest this was a “jihadist attack”, however this has not been confirmed by officials..............http://rt.com/news/216827-france-lorry-crash-christmas/

Cinque persone sarebbero in condizioni gravi.

  5. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls called Tuesday for "vigilance" after the country was hit by three bizarre attacks in quick succession, sparking fears of possible copycat action...

The latest incident in the western city of Nantes saw a driver plough into a Christmas market on Monday evening, injuring 10 people before stabbing himself repeatedly and being arrested, a day after a similar attack in another French town saw 13 hurt.

And on Saturday, a man was shot dead after walking into a police station in the central town of Joue-les-Tours and attacking three officers with a knife, two of whom were seriously injured.

The man reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" ("God is greater") during the assault and had recently posted a flag of the Islamic State group on his Facebook page, prompting concerns that the attack was motivated by Islamic extremism.

Valls told Europe 1 radio there was "no link" between the incidents. Both car rampages appeared to have been committed by people with psychological problems.

"The best response is to continue to live peacefully with the necessary vigilance of course," he said.

Valls was due to meet with several ministers on Tuesday morning to "take measures if they are necessary".
