"There is no connection between these people and the enquiry" in Belgium, Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the federal prosecutor's office, said.
A Greek police source said investigators had sent DNA evidence and fingerprints to Belgium to establish whether Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the 27-year-old suspected mastermind of the Belgian cell, was among the four suspects.
Belgian authorities say the group targeted in a police raid Thursday in the eastern town of Verviers, in which two suspects were killed, was plotting to kill Belgian police officers.
The federal prosecutor's office has refused to comment on local media reports that Abaaoud, a Belgian national of Moroccan origin, planned the foiled attacks from Greece or Turkey.
The reports say he made calls from Greece to the brother of one of the two suspects killed in the shootout with police in Verviers.
According to Belgian media, Abaaoud spent time fighting alongside the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria.
He was already known to security forces after appearing in an ISIL video, at the wheel of a car transporting mutilated bodies to a mass grave.
He is also known as the older brother of a 13-year-old boy dubbed Syria's youngest foreign fighter by British media after photos surfaced of him posing with weapons.
Thirteen people were arrested across Belgium in connection with the Verviers cell, five of whom were later charged with "participating in the activities of a terrorist group."
Weapons, bomb-making materials, police uniforms and fake documents were found during searches of their homes.
Two fugitives who left Belgium immediately after the attack have been arrested in France.
The Belgium raid came a week after Islamist attacks in and around Paris killed 17 people, rekindling fears in Europe about the threat posed by young Europeans returning home after fighting alongside extremist groups in the Middle East.
Belgium estimates that 335 of its people have gone to fight in Syria and Iraq in the last few years -- making it the European country with the highest proportion of nationals enlisted with Middle Eastern jihadist groups.

ReplyDeleteΝέα τροπή πήρε το βράδυ της Κυριακής η υπόθεση του Αλγερινού που προσήχθη από την ελληνική Αντιτρομοκρατική Υπηρεσία, μαζί με ένα ακόμα άτομο από το Παγκράτι. Ενώ αρχικά οι Βέλγοι είχαν ανακοινώσει ότι δεν συντρέχουν λόγοι την κράτησή του, αργότερα επανήλθαν ζητώντας την σύλληψη και την έκδοση του υπόπτου για πιθανή σχέση με σχέδιο τζιχαντιστών να επιτεθούν στη βελγική αστυνομία.
Το μεσημέρι της Κυριακής, αφού είχαν διερευνηθεί όλα τα στοιχεία που απέστειλαν οι ελληνικές αρχές για τον Αλγερινό, ηλικίας 31 ετών, η βελγική εισαγγελία απάντησε εγγράφως ότι δεν προκύπτει σχέση με την ομάδα τζιχαντιστών και επομένως μπορούσε να αφεθεί ελεύθερος.
Οι αρμόδιοι της Αντιτρομοκρατικής Υπηρεσίας άφησαν ελεύθερο τον έναν από τους προσαχθέντες, κράτησαν όμως τον 31χρονο, προκειμένου να του πάρουν συμπληρωματική κατάθεση και να εξαντλήσουν όλα τις πιθανότητες για τυχόν εμπλοκή του.

Belgium seeks extradition of Greece detainee ...
ReplyDeleteBelgium is asking Greece to extradite one of the suspects arrested there over a possible link with the alleged Islamist plot against Belgian police, prosecutors say.
The statement came hours after Belgium said there was no connection between those detained and the alleged plot.
The federal prosecutor's office now says "further analysis" prompted the latest request to Athens.

ReplyDeleteLe parquet fédéral demande l'extradition d'un des suspects arrêtés samedi en Grèce, un Algérien de 33 ans, en raison d'un lien possible avec la cellule djihadiste démantelée en fin de semaine dernière. La police grecque a confirmé avoir reçu la demande et indique qu'il sera conduit ce lundi devant le procureur compétent en Grèce. Du matériel a été transmis aux autorités belges, des échantillons d'ADN notamment. ReplyDeleteL’Algérien de 33 ans arrêté samedi à Athènes et soupçonné d’avoir un lien avec la cellule djihadiste démantelée la semaine dernière en Belgique s’est dit « d’accord » mardi pour être extradé vers ce pays, a-t-on appris de source judiciaire grecque.
Le suspect a indiqué vouloir être extradé afin de « prouver son innocence » dans cette affaire, lors de sa comparution devant le procureur de la cour d’appel d’Athènes qui venait lui-même de requérir cette extradition pour « appartenance à une organisation terroriste », selon la même source. La décision finale sur l’extradition sera rendue par un juge d’ici à mercredi.
