Euro zone, Greece fail to agree way forward following meeting

Euro zone finance ministers were unable to agree with Greece a final statement or a way to continue talks until their next meeting on Monday, following hours of discussions in Brussels to extend an international bailout...

"We explored a number of issues, one of which was the current programme," Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who chaired the meeting, told a news conference tonight in Brussels.
"We discussed the possibility of an extension. For some that is clear that is preferred option but we haven't come to that conclusion as yet. We will need a little more time."

Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis had begun talks with his euro zone peers after his government won a confidence vote for its refusal to extend an international bailout.
The former academic said he was ready for a clash with Germany and its allies over Greece's decision to scrap austerity measures, end cooperation with the bailout Troika and demand a "haircut" reducing its debt burden.
"If a debt can no longer be paid off then that leads to a haircut," he told a German magazine. "What is critical is that Greece's debt cannot be paid off in the near future."
German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has said that if Greece is not willing to request an extension of its €240bn bailout - the biggest in financial history - "then that's it", ruling out further assistance or debt forgiveness......................http://www.rte.ie/news/2015/0211/679290-greece/

  2. Greece, euro zone fail to agree on debt, to try again on Monday ...

(Reuters) - Greece's new leftist government and its international creditors failed to agree on a way forward on the country's unpopular bailout and will try again on Monday, with time running out for a financing deal.

In seven hours of crisis talks in Brussels that ended after midnight, euro zone finance ministers were unable to agree even a joint statement on the next procedural steps. Both sides played down the setback, insisting there had been no rupture.

But Greek stock prices, which whipped higher after hours in New York on talk of an accord, sagged with disappointment when it emerged that Greece's laconic new Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis had walked away from a draft deal to extend current credit terms after conferring with fellow Greek officials.

"We had an intense discussion, constructive, covering a lot of ground, also making progress, but not enough progress yet to come to joint conclusions," Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the chairman of Eurogroup finance ministers, told a midnight news conference.....................http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/02/12/us-eurozone-greece-idUSKBN0LF1CE20150212?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

  4. Germany sends first minister to visit Greece amid crisis...

Germany's European Affairs minister, Michael Roth, will visit Athens to meet his Greek counterpart Nikos Chountis on Friday, the Greek foreign ministry said on Thursday.

It would be the first visit to Greece by a German minister since Greeks elected the radical left-wing government of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.

Greece and Germany are currently at an impasse over Tsipras's demands for an end to European-imposed austerity and a renegotiation of Greece's debt burden.
