The British administration of the Malvinas Islands has found the decision by London to increase its military garrison in the resource-rich archipelago “calming.”
In a statement released today, the Legislative Assembly of the disputed South Atlantic territories – which were occupied by the British in 1833, when they expelled Argentina’s native population from the islands -, said it was “calming to know that the government of its Majesty maintains its commitment with the defence of our islands and our home.”
“It was also encouraging to notice the strong support the secretary of state (Michael Fallon) received from other members of Parliament,” the text showing the signature of the assembly’s president Barry Elsby added.
“There will be few changes in the reinforcement of the total position but we welcome the return of the Chinooks (helicopters) which were withdrawn in 2006 to back the operations in Afghanistan.” [buenosairesherald.com]

ReplyDeleteBritain's remark that Argentina remains a threat to the disputed Falkland Islands is baseless and aimed at stirring nationalist sentiment ahead of a May general election in that country, a senior Argentine government official said on Wednesday.
Britain's defence secretary told lawmakers on Tuesday that it would reinforce its military presence on the Falklands to ensure they were properly protected.
