Iran leader says concerned about West "deception" in nuclear talks

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Thursday that he is concerned about the "deception" by the West in ongoing nuclear talks, local media reported.

"The Iranian nuclear negotiating team, appointed by the president (Hassan Rouhani), is good, and they are honest people who are working for the good of the country, but I am concerned because the other party is deceptive and tricky who strikes the dagger from behind," Khamenei told a group of senior religious scholars.

"As we approach the deadline for the talks, the tone of the other party, particularly the United States, has become more radical and violent, which is the feature of their deception and manners," the official IRNA news agency quoted Khamenei as saying.

  • Khamenei also referred to a recent letter from a number of US senators as "the embodiment of the decadence of the political ethics in the US system."
  • Governments should not violate commitments made by their predecessors, he said.
On Monday, 47 US Republican senators warned that a deal over Iran's nuclear program will be at risk once President Barack Obama leaves office. /Xinhua
