Nepal declares three-day mourning for earthquake victims

Prime Minister of Nepal Sushil Koirala has declared three days of mourning on Tuesday for the victims of the magniture-7.9 earthquake, which rocked the country on Saturday. He said as much in his televised address to the nation.

"In memory of our Nepalese and foreign brothers and sisters, senior citizens and children who died as a result of this devastating earthquake, we decided to declare three days of national mourning beginning today," the Zee News information portal quotes him as saying.

According to the latest reports, the death toll from the earthquake in Nepal has reached 5,057 people, more than 10,000 others were injured.

    Nepal has declared three days of mourning for the victims of Saturday's earthquake in which more than 5,000 people are now known to have died.

    Prime Minister Sushil Koirala says the government is doing all it can but is overwhelmed by the scale of the catastrophe.

    Rescuers are still struggling to bring aid to remote Himalayan areas.

  2. Nepal says no more foreign teams needed....

    Nepal has told foreign search and rescue teams not to come because there are already enough in the earthquake-hit country, a senior UN official said.

    Resident coordinator for Nepal Jamie McGoldrick said the government had decided it had enough foreign experts in and around the capital Kathmandu.

    "They feel they have enough capacity to deal with the immediate needs in search and rescue," he told AFP.

    "Those that are already en route can come but the others are being told not to."

    Kathmandu's tiny single-runway airport has struggled to accommodate the huge rush of flights bringing in aid and foreign experts.

    A French military plane carrying relief supplies and medical charity workers was stuck in Abu Dhabi because it could not get permission to land in Kathmandu, according to a French foreign ministry source......rte.ie
